Fatimah Altaleb Daft #2 10/25 ENG 100-12 Zolfo Thesis ment Career Planning plays various important roles in the development and guidance ofone’s career objective. These roles tend to vary in their level of importance and are carried out in different steps. Introduction The Thorndike dictionary connotes that; a goal that a person is enthusiastic to attain in a preferred field or occupation with a properly formulated plan and acts as his/her guidance is referred as, career planning. Additionally, Magnuson .S, alludes that; career planning encompasses myriad sub-skills; Career awareness and career exploration form the foundation for effective life career planning. Career means profession, which we want to adopt for earning livelihood, and planning means proper flow or to make proper decisions. Pre- planning in our life also plays crucial role in every aspect of life, to work in a proper flow, and facilitates our capacity to advance in knowledge acquisition which is imperative and enables us to fit in the current competitive world. When students graduate from college there is a tendency that most of them are still uncertain of their accomplished degree. It is of great pertinence that whether careers direct our study or we will direct our career goal. Career Planning as a Gateway to Success The importance of career planning tends to be a fundamental a gateway to the students. As social scientists have long evaluated, the vast majority of Americans aspire to attaining excellent careers, which can be generally defined to encompass complex of elements such as decent job, career goal, and self-actualization. Therefore, the four year period undertaken by students to complete their college education has created a pathway for the attainment of these goals. However, the general perception of most people is that, it is more imperative for a high school graduate to go to college rather than take a decent job offer right out of high school. Given the importance of higher education, it is hardly surprising that access to higher education has assumed, at least in the public’s mind, the status of a virtual right. The public’s logic is straightforward. Since a college degree is closely linked to a good job, to deny a motivated and qualified student access to a higher education is to say to that person, in effect, “You have no chance to become full partner in American life.” This idea is clearly unacceptable to the vast majority of Americans. In order to access a better job as well as obtaining job satisfaction career planning paves the way. Planning your career tends to be an investment of time and effort. The career planning process apparently involves: gathering and organizing information about the candidate and the world of work, establishing your immediate and long-term career objectives; and achieving those objectives through effective job hunting. Each part is very important for the career planning. Decisiveness in career planning may assist us to find out interest, skills, accomplishments, value, lifestyle, life roles, present situation and risk taking. These are among the tools for self-assessment for a person. After that the candidate need to do the career assessment. This is the most critical part of career planning. Modification of Expectations Career assessment appears to play a significant role in modifying the expectations of the candidate. Consequently, career planning also assists the candidate to generate options according to the expectation of the candidates for instance; keeping the candidates updated according to the market trend. There are various dimensions that the assessment could be done such as; according to the salary, geographic location or even nature of industry. Each of these variables may play an important role for job satisfaction. Students who may be unprepared for their careers may end up going back to college even after they graduated in order to change their careers, which likely result to squandering. It is therefore imperative that career planning should be awarded the greatest priority since it plays a major role in one’s life. Frustration and devastation occur in people who fail above planning of getting their dream job. As a result, a person may endure one of the toughest moments in life which is the mid-career change in an over and over again circumstance. There occur a variety of steps that one need to take into consideration when planning his/her career the first one being setting goals. A goal is something you want to achieve end of certain time which occurs in two different forms; short and long term goals. Short terms goals are achievable for one to three years and long term goals can be achievable for three to five years. The candidate needs to make the self-assessment to make the proper career planning as well as needs to a complete the examination of viable career options which were identified during the self-evaluation. Thereupon, this assessment is necessary to find out the internal strength and weakness of the candidate. According to the self-assessment goal can be set. This self-assessment can be used in different part of the professional life. In the planning process there is the option to switch to alter or change the career path. So the planner is very comfortable if there is any kind of external change. Lack of proper planning may present very difficult situations for a person to cope with the changing external situation. Sometime there could be economical down turn or drastically fall of the industrial growth. So in this situation, career planning could help intensely to adjust to any kind of situation. Moreover, Career planning may assist the student in setting a benchmark in accordance to the market trend. According to the strengths and weaknesses, people can assess the opportunity and threat to the external environment. Formulation of Vision Statements Another imperative aspect of career planning has been identified its capacity to enable the students formulate their vision statements. After formulating the vision statement, career goal needs to be reviewed time to time. In connection to this aspect, career planning may enable a person to keep the vision clear and visible through keeping their focus on achievement of the objectives. This is because it gives a clearer picture to the person in concern and therefore, the person can focus on making the objectives come to life because their minds are not as clouded as those without career plans. Someone with a plan will always be on the move in an attempt to get the objectives set out while others might get tempted to move off track and lose sight of their main career goals. Someone with a plan and someone who aims to achieve will be greatly influenced to win if they have a well-structured career plan in place. This is because their career plan acts as their professional benchmark and light. This also requires that one must show high levels of flexibility as some aspects may require changes and replacement of various dimensions of the plan. Conclusion Obviously poor career choice insinuates that a person has temporarily made a wrong choice in his/her life; however this situation may be corrected. The future is un-predictable and therefore we could still make our place in this meritocratic world by making career goals and plans in advance, for getting better opportunities in the current pluralistic and globalize world. It is important that we pre-plan our goals under the supervision of professionals in conscious state of mind, so that we can strategically maintain our goals and follow it towards the path of successful future.
