Extract of sample "The Free Consumption of Internet Files"

I base my point on the fact that the consumption of free music on the internet eventually destroys the music industry. Technological advancements should not be an excuse for people to abuse the rights of others. I would argue that the current laws do not have the requisite structures that might help the law enforcers in curtailing such malpractices.

Essentially, downloading of files should be done with due consideration of the interests of the owners. In the event where the owners are in business, acts of free downloading of music would, in the long run, ruin the business. In fact, free downloading of music discourages the growth and practice of talent as the artists lose the initiative to engage in more creative work. The whole practice is a disincentive and amounts to a flagrant infringement on the intellectual property rights of other people (Lessig, 2001).

Although I acknowledge the fact that the current laws have some element of a mismatch with the emerging technologies, this should not be an excuse to infringe on other people’s property rights. Even if the laws are outdated, the principle remains the same in the sense that they are meant to safeguard intellectual property rights.
