Hassan and his father Ali were servants but Amir shared a more affectionate relation with them. It was an event that occurred during a kite flying tournament that changed his perspective of life, it was a moment when he decided not to confront the aggressors to protect Hassan, the one person who would gladly give up his life for him. All these factors played a role in his ultimate act of betrayal when Hassan was raped.

Amir became silent witness of the event hiding behind a wall. His decision not to get involved with the aggressors came from his feeling that Hassan was merely a servant and sacrifice of Hassan was necessary to win his father’s love and admiration. This event essentially ends his childhood. The feeling of guilt remained with him although
