This work enjoys a great reception among book lovers all over the world. The narration of the story rotates around the life of James and his girlfriend Kate, whom he met at a bar after having a big night concerning his success as a publisher. After a few days of them being together, Kate discovered that she is pregnant with James’ baby. As if that was not enough trouble, they both lost their jobs leaving them feeling lost and devastated.
The two of them, therefore, head west with no money and desperate to make ends meet. Out of anxiety about how to survive, James engages himself in drugs. The book goes on to explain the ins and outs of the drug world and the effects of greed on the main character, James.
James showed a great deal of greed among all the characters in the novel. He wanted a lot of things which lead him into making bad decisions. First of all, he involved himself with drugs when things went south for him and Kate. He chose the wrong path of drug dealing since it seemed to him that it could be of much more worth than any other job out there that was availed to him. He could not care about endangering himself. In addition to this, James proved his greediness in how he supplied marijuana to his customers (D’Souza 18).
