Perceptor went to school for her master's in education and while in school, the educator position was vacant so she applied and she was hired. She said she normally starts her day-by-day work in the unit to see how everyone was doing. Then she at times goes to meetings or works on educational projects.
Some of the things she does as an educator include attending quality control meetings, making sure all the staff members in the unit are up to date on their skills, and planning and organizing programs such as yearly competency skill days. She teaches preceptor classes for the hospital staff, NRP, and pere-natal classes. As a nurse educator, she works very closely with the unit manager and the other educators in the hospital. She also helps provide the OB unit with Research on best practices to help improve their patient care.
Focus on Role Development
My preceptor is modeling the role of MSN or APN which is to influence the practice of the nurses/care providers by disseminating evidence through education and training, to facilitate the clinical nurses to give evidence-based care to their clients and based on my observations; I believe I can see myself transitioning into that role by the end of graduation in my program. At this point I would not know what kind of strength I would need to develop or anything I would like to do differently since I just started my practicum.
Focus on challenges, problem-solving and critical thinking:
So far I do not have any issues with my project yet. I am still thinking about topics for the project. I will decide on a specific topic by next week.
Focus on project progress:
Together with my preceptor, we have come up with the below two possible topics to write on.
1. Circumcision: Should the nurse be in the Circumcision Room with the physician instead of a PCT during the procedure since it’s an invasive procedure?
2. Placenta Ingestion: Is there Evidence-based on any health benefits of eating a placenta? Is it best practice or safe to give patients their placenta to take home per request and if so what measures should a hospital take before releasing the placenta to patients? Read More
