The practice has been well-known as plagiarism. This can be universally defined as the act of copying or imitating the works, words, ideas, thoughts, or feelings conveyed by an author in a particular text without acknowledging the original text and the author. In many cases, the doers of plagiarism are students who do their assignments haphazardly, who do not trust their knowledge and ability on the given task, and others who aim for a high mark. Aside from this, plagiarism has evolved from being just the mere act of copying and pasting texts. In general, there are two basic acts of plagiarism; these are total plagiarism and partial plagiarism.

Total plagiarism is defined as an act of an individual copying all the texts of a specific source and considering them his or her work. This replication of published texts is a fraudulent act, which also encompasses the act of photocopying material without asking permission from the author or the publisher. Aside from this, full plagiarism can also occur when an individual copies verbatim a sentence or a phrase, which is composed of three or more words from a source. It is essential for an individual to avoid total plagiarism, especially when the person does not have any intention of citing the source or sources because, in the academe, it is considered academic dishonesty.

Another type of plagiarism is partial plagiarism which is described as a manner of changing certain words with synonyms. It is the act of switching and tweaking words with the same meanings or tweaking sentences and phrases, which are of a similar context to the original text. In this case, there may have been changes done in the full text, but the thought or the idea of the source is still being applied to the text. The formula to avoid this type of plagiarism is to thoroughly read the source or sources, and then create your interpretation or contextualization of the idea of the author or authors while still giving credit to the source.

Based on the given definitions, it is important to consider that a person must first be aware that plagiarism does exist for it to be avoided. After acknowledging the presence or the ability to plagiarize, a person must then understand the basic concepts of plagiarism, such as the most common, including total plagiarism and partial plagiarism.
