The room had become quite hot and some of the relatives had started moving to the lawns which was awashed with the sweet smell of jasmine. I looked at my relatives who were evading my eyes and trying to avoid me. ‘Lily! Lets go outside and talk.’ I turned around and found my maternal uncle smiling at me and beckoning me. I was pleasantly surprised because it was not often that he tried to be part of family gathering. He was the black sheep but favourite of poa poa and twin of my mother. My spirit lifted and I ran to him, hugging him tightly.

He patted my shoulder and took my hands. It was as if he understood my dilemma and wanted to share my feelings. It was a godsend opportunity to open my heart and seek support. So what if I was lesbian and loved a woman rather than a man? Suddenly, there was huge commotion and the crowd full of men and women fell silent. I had the premonition and when I looked at the door, there she was, standing in all glory, wearing a huge smile and carrying a bouquet of red roses. She straight away headed towards mother, who was fidgeting and trying to ignore the meeting which was inevitable.

‘Hello aunty! Happy birthday!’ Oh God, even I had forgotten that it was mum’s birthday and so had the relatives. But uncle was smiling broadly because he had already wished his twin in private. The atmosphere suddenly became festive amidst the chant of happy birthday. Animosity and differences were forgotten. Lou had won the heart of my mother. My heart sang and I heard my laughter echoing the joy that I felt with my lover in sight. We were accepted! (words: 295)ReferenceTsui, Kitty.
