CLA Boeing 787, a twin engine jet airliner developed by Boeing Commercial Airplanes is a highly talked about topic thesedays. This new aviation invention has made its name in the news due to its unique and different features. It established itself as the first All Nippon Airways. Lot of research about Boeing 787 has been done since its failure in the battery and when the fixation was needed. Two articles, ‘Does Boeing Have a 787 Battery Fix?’ published by Wall Street Journals on 20th February, 2013and ‘Boeing to Propose Redesign of 787 Battery to F.A.A’ published by The New York Times on 20th February, 2013 talks about the same issue. Both the articles talk about the fixation of the battery in 787 jets after the failure of the batteries in Boston on Jan.7. The articles are written in the form of a report about the reasons of the failure and future plans that the authorities want to start towards the fixation of the problems. Though the articles revolve around the same issue and problem; still due to different writers and publishers, one would find clear difference between the writer’s tone, style, purpose, audience and language use. Each writer has adopted different strategies in the article which conveys the information to the audience. In order to discuss what strategies have both the writers adopted in writing, it is necessary to analyze both the articles and look for the different writing methodology being adopted. In the article ‘Boeing to Propose Redesign of 787 Battery to F.A.A.’ published by The New York Times the writer starts with the positive news about the fixation of the batteries. The writer starts with the declaration of the possible fixes that can be done to the problems and that the jets can be seen in the air within two months. The writer says “787 jets and could have them back in the air within two months, industry and federal officials said Wednesday” (Christopher). The writer seems to be positive about the topic. The reader would at once get an idea that the problem has been fixed by reading the initial paragraph. The starting paragraph of the article gives a confirmation vibe to the audience. The title of the article too confirms the positive tone of the writer as the title says “Boeing to Propose Redesign of 787 Battery to F.A.A.” The highly noticeable style being adopted by the writer in the article seems that of a reporter, the writer makes no incorporation of direct quotes by the authorities that commented on the issues and fixation of the problems. The writer uses the names like “Boeing officials said” or “Federal Officials said”. Though the writer has referenced to different people in his report but their actual and direct quotes are missing. The writer has made the use of their indirect quotes in the writing. The purpose of the article seems to provide information to the target audience. The writer’s incorporation of different comments by the officials and provision of the information about the 787 jets illustrates that the writer’s purpose of writing the article seems to provide information and news about the unfortunate incidence that occurred in the past and the present status of the plans about the fixation. The writer has also provided the background information too to the audience for their better understanding of the context, for example he says “investigators have said occurred on the battery that caught fire in Boston on Jan. 7. Boeing might also adjust how tightly the batteries are packed” As far the audience is concerned, the writer seems to have targeted specifically the people highly interested in the aviation business. The topic of the article is not a general social topic but specific. The writer has made the use of the technical vocabulary like ‘F.A.A’, ‘lithium ion batteries’ and ‘Boeing’. Though the audience seems to be specific, it cannot be said that the article is written specifically for the people that are related to the aviation affairs. The common readers of the news can also be highly interested in the topic. The article ‘Does Boeing Have a 787 Battery Fix? Published by Wall Street Journals has a different start. It starts with a question about the fact that whether Boeing 787 battery has a fix or not. The writer shows the uncertainty about the topic being written by him. The topic of the article gives an uncertain vibe about the fixation of the problems. It might raise different questions in the mind of the reader. It can be said that the writer has an uncertain tone. The style of writing adopted by the writer also seems to be that of a reporter. He has written the article in the form of a report for the audience, providing the information about the reasons of the incidents that took place due to the failures in the batteries of the jets. The writer has made the use of direct quotes in his writing. He has made the use of direct quotes of different authorities that commented on the issue. The report talks more on the reasons of the failures of the batteries rather than the fixation of the batteries and actual reason behind the failures, for example he says “However, if true, Wednesday’s report is only a partial solution. After all, there has been no mention of putting temperature sensors on each battery or a system of forced airflow to cool them off if they overheat” (Cohan). The writer clearly states no solution to the problem. The purpose of the writer behind writing the article seems to provide the information about the unfortunate incident that occurred and the reason behind it. Though it is just a normal report where different authorities have been reported, the article gives no new information about the future plans towards the fixation. The audience of this article seems be specific and general both. As there is no usage of the technical terms that is out of the general audience understands. The topic written is not of a interest topic to the general audience also makes one believe that it is written for the specific aviation people. Thus, to conclude it can be said that both the articles revolve around the same topic and theme still it has specific differences in the style, tone and purpose of the writers. one article talks about certainty, while other talks about uncertainty, one makes the direct use of the quotes and the other indirect quotes. Through the analysis of the methodology adopted by the different writers, writing about the same topics one would judge that how different techniques being adopted can change the purpose of writing an article.
