The scorching sun is determined not to give up on its mission to demand sweat from everyone in the field. The evergreen grass, or rather patches on the playfield are mouth-watering as school children try to display their talents in various games; basketball and football. Looking at the movement of their feet, one could confuse them with hockey sticks because they are tiny. Whatever is bringing these kids together is the ball which is in motion. All they want is the ball. Skinny players are swifter than the heavy ones as they go after the ball.

Surrounding the playground is the crowd made up of supporters of the two football teams (Lions and Gaza). The shouting intensifies as the ball roll to the west of the field, towards the Gaza side, led by this tall and dark boy. Shouts of jubilation and joy fill the atmosphere after a shot goes passed Gaza’s goalkeeper and leaves the net shaking.

On the other side of the compound, there is clapping and singing as the Mamba and Ozone outplay each other on the basketball court. The dust fills the place as the players dribble the ball to their opponent’s side. Everybody on the court is sweating profusely, struggling for victory. Those kids who are allergic to dust cough as they deteriorate in the fight for their teams. In a matter of minutes, the worst happens. There is this final dunk followed by a whistling sound to mark the end of the game. Mamba fans dip their heads in their arms, discouraged by the great loss of their team. Jumping, shouting and singing in celebration are the Ozone fans. Emotions take control of every kid at this stage. Cameras click and crave a portion of history for this day full of activities.
