d Bank defines poverty as deprivation of well being, as such it includes as many factors such as low income and the inability to acquire basic human needs such as food, cloths, health care and other services that are necessary for human to live with dignity. Absolute poverty is a term that has been used in definition of economics to mean the poverty that is common between nations for a given period. For instance, people were considered as absolutely poor if they lived below $ 1 US dollar a day, however, this standard has been raised to USD 1.

Relative poverty is another term that is used in the measurement of poverty, it is measured relative to some fixed proportion of the population; in most instances, it is usually measured based on the median income of the population. This type of poverty measurement is usually measured in certain contexts. In the developed countries where it is very hard to find people living below the set poverty standards, relative poverty as a measure of poverty is used to determine the levels of deprivation, this is because it reflects better the cost of social inclusion and equality of opportunities.

Various sectors of the economy have that characteristics that define poverty; in the health sector, about 30 per cent of the deaths or 18 million people annually are as a result of poverty related causes. The people who live in absolute poverty conditions are more prone to hunger and diseases since they cannot afford basic nutrition or quality health care facilities. In addition, the living conditions of these people such as sanitation and nutrition content of their diets increases the risk of them being affected by diseases as compared to those above the poverty line who can afford to live decently.
