10 years after my grandmother’s burial, but sweet memories of her presence still linger in my mind anytime I enter her room. It is as if she left a print in my head about her. She had been a nice person to me and very influential throughout my life as I grew up. In her old age, she had a house right next to our home and I was the one who took care of her as she struggled through her advanced age. In as much as her death was a major blow to the family, but her memories are still to date whenever I enter her bedroom. Positioned on the western side of the compound, her door facing on the setting sun, my grandmother’s bedroom had a spectacular balcony view where she used to sit and see the sun set. One could not fail to notice the jasmine smell and the sweet scent of flowers that was right in front of her balcony. My grandmother had planted a lot of Chinese plants which she had valued them as medicinal through their good scent. Her green stripped door always reminded me of her favorite colors which he had grown fond of since childhood. The door knob to the bedroom is aluminum plated one, which when touched, sends shivers down your spine as it is always cold. In opening her door, no one could fail to notice the sultry scent that passed through ones nostrils. The place had poor lighting as all the windows had been locked; hence one had to grapple for the main light switch at the right hand side of the entrance so as to have light. Getting the switch is not an easy task too as your eyes maneuver through the dark lit room. After finding it, one always made a sign of relief as the place is just creepy. The first thing one always notices after switching on the lights in the bedroom, is an old black sewing machine positioned in the center of the room. The machine has never been used for over 10 years and as far as I can remember, my mother ever told me that it was the best gift which my grandfather gave to her when they got married. One could not fail to notice how dusty is looked. Furthermore, on the furthest corner of the room, an old hanging clock existed. Though old, it still functioned. Dusty and hanging clumsily on the wall, no one could notice that the wall clock had been there for the past 20 years. Next to it, there were three pictures, one for my grandmother, one for my grandmother and a picture of Virgin Mary. My grandmother was a catholic and one could not fail to notice a rosary hang next to Virgin Mary’s portrait. This came as a surprise as most Chinese do not actually believe in Religion. My grandparents portrait was that taken during their wedding day when in their 30’s. One could not fail to notice the love that was in between her as she smiled her best to have the black and white picture taken. On the far right hand side of the room, there was a lone 6 by 4 feet bed and underneath it, a cozy silk carpet. The bed was enormous and was made by hard timber just from looking at it. It was probably the best design during their time. It was strong and has a nice finish both in front and back. It had been painted mahogany. Her bed still had the 6 by 4 mattress and was well spread. It had a pink sheet will exquisite pillow covers. Next to her bed, she had a reading table with an old reading lamp. One could not fail to notice the pile of books on her table. She had all sort of books ranging from politics to romantic novels of her ages. My grandmother used to be a reader. On the right hand corner of the table, had a spectacles case with her old reading glasses. The sight of those glasses reminded me of the good old days when I used to sit on her lap as she read for me a good night story before going to slumber land. My childhood was filled with happy moments thanks to my grandmother who made it a possibility. Every single night, she used to come to my room and read me a story before going to bed. Not forgetting, there was a jar full of candies and cookies that was positioned on the left side of the room, in a lone shelf. It was the same jar that my grandmother used to coax my cousin and I to come to her place. She used to coax us to do some house chores in her bedroom like cleaning when we were teenagers and she rewarded as with candies and cookies. It was fun going to her place as we automatically knew that she had something for us to eat. In moving through her bedroom, one would not fail to notice the strong smell of Chinese medicine that always made me feel uncomfortable. During her final days on earth, she had been diagnosed to have been having a chronic illness, osteoarthritis. She majorly believed in the healing power of Chinese medicine and hence plenty of that in her room to relieve her symptoms. In going through her closet, the smell of mothball hit me as I noticed how clean and organized the place had been left. The showers seemed to have never been opened for over 5 years and a silky brown towel was next to it. In addition, there was a glass mirror in front of the shower and a small cupboard which she used to place her toiletries. Read More
