The spring festival originated during the famous Shang Dynasty. It involved sacrifices offered to gods and the people’s ancestors. Chinese society members mark the spring festival by preparing delicious traditional foods. Welcoming the New Year forms an important occasion during the spring festival. Bakhtin equally intended to reveal the extent to which past celebrations and events fade in the current society. In Bakhtin’s view, the carnivaslesque is a notably fading and uncommon occurrence in modern and civilized societies.

However, maintains that there are instances if the carnivaslesque in the modern world in other forms. Various occasions such as the super bowl are modern expressions of the carnivaslesque. There are diverse carnival-like elements that are similar to those in the Chinese New year. Bakhtin’s interest in the carnivals of medieval Europe reveals similar attributes to the Chinese spring festival and celebrations. Both celebrations tend to fade in the civilized world. Most cultural practices practiced during the Chinese New Year celebrations are not existent in the in the civilized Chinese celebrations.

Similarly, Bakhtin reveals that popular life and practices during carnivalesque began to disappear from the seventeenth century. The carnival faded and lost its meaning in the civilized society. This is similar to the practices during traditional Chinese New Year celebrations. During the time of the carnival, the celebrations involved liberation of the society members. It is noteworthy that the revelers at the carnivaslesque celebrations were independent from influence of the government. Similarly, different dynasties in the Chinese emperor exercised diverse customs and traditions during the spring festival.
