The War against Cigarette Smoking - Assignment Example

Peer pressure and an increase in leisure activities today have attracted youths to cigarette smoking. In this light, a new approach must be engaged to reduce this behaviour among the youth if the health of the population is to be guaranteed in all countries.

            Cigarette smoking is one of the major causes of lung diseases in society today. Health statistics indicate that the largest percentage of lung diseases such as cancer in many countries is caused by Tobacco smoking. The Cancer Research UK (2013) shows that over 86% of the lung cancer deaths in the UK result from tobacco smoking in the public. Also, tobacco is known for causing pancreas, stomach kidney and aero-digestive tract cancers. These figures show that cigarette smoking claims the largest percent of lung cancer deaths in this country. The implication of this is that the only way to reduce lung cancer is to launch a strategic war against tobacco smoking in society. If the government reduces the number of smokers in the country, it would save the lives of not only smokers but also those close to smokers (Rao, Aslam, Zaheer & Shafique, 2014). This is the reason why the government in many countries has launched many awareness campaigns to discourage cigarette smoking among the youths who are the most affected in society. In brief, tobacco smoking is an unhealthy habit that leads to high death rates in most countries.

The youths are the majority of smokers in many countries in the world. This can be associated with the increasing attention to leisure in the world and the consequent peer pressure within society. Statistics by Cancer Research UK (2013) show that majority of smokers lie within the age of 20 and 24 years. In 2011, 13% of the youths between the age of 20 and 24 years were smoking. In each day, at least five youth were smoking for the first time in the UK, and among these were being introduced by their peers. These statistics show that the youths are the majority of the people affected by this behaviour. This means that the war against youth smoking has not succeeded and that more youths are bound to join in cigarette smoking habit each day (Dorfman et al., 2014: Macka et al., 2013).). This promises more cases of lung cancer in the near future among the public in these countries and in the world as a whole. As such, the government should focus on more effective strategies to discourage the behaviour of the youths, as part of their strategy to fight against Lung Cancer in the world. In brief, the war against tobacco smoking must target the youth as the most affected group in the world.

The efforts of the government to control this behaviour within the public have failed to provide fruitful results. Therefore, there is a need for the government to design a more effective strategy to fight against this behaviour among the youth and to ensure a healthy future for society.
