Via this character, the author illustrates the Christian idea of grace, which God gives free to people who ask for it. In the story, the focus is on the grandmother who achieves grace when she was about to pass on. For the author, the grace of God is an external force outside an individual. The authors handling and presentation of characters in this story elicits the idea that man is a fallen creature. In sum, the story shows the destruction of a jointly too usual family by three escaped villains. The theme in the book incorporates a provision of grace and grandmother’s recognition of that gift because of epiphany she faced before she died. The short provides a family picture that is characterized by dissension and disrespect (O’Connor 19).
