Just when you think a person is down and out, something will happen to give him a new lease on life. That is what I believe to be the very message of this poem. It is not hard to see why a person would see the theme of resiliency in this poem. The snake was officially dead, Not reacting to anything to anything that was done to it, until it was shocked back to life. The whole situation could actually be interpreted as a study in the way that humans bounce back after a traumatizing event. Strong and with a new power to live.

When I was reading this very short story, it never occurred to me that a break - up between the two unnamed characters was to follow. Maybe because a break-up is not a common event that happens after a pair experience a near death experience. Yet, I believe that it was this near death experience that caused the break up in the first place. The man and the woman in the story are examples of opposites. A man who is willing to take the life of an animal is a man who shows no respect for life whatsoever.

The woman who left him after the event most likely did so because she realized that she needed to fear for her own life in the process. The owl, signified the possibility of changing life directions even when it seems like there is no logical chance it would succeed. It is this study in the human behavior when faced with the possibility of death that makes this short story quite interesting to read. In a few lines, Sherman Alexie managed to convey an effective study of two different human behaviors.

Two behaviors that logic dictates to be an acceptable sense of survival in two different humans. This is story is perhaps the most entertaining and thought provoking of all of the stories to emanate from the prolific mind of Sherman Alexie. After all, it deals with the controversial topic of creation. A topic that I find near and dear to my heart
