The author has poetic, keen insights and stream of consciousness that makes the book easily readable and memorable. The chapters are almost self-contained, lyrical and dense like poetry. The book focuses on the growth of Esperanza, her psychological and emotional conflicts. It focuses on her resentment of her new neighbourhood, the Mango Street, its people's sexism, poverty and the desperation that accompany her conflicts. The House On Mango Street exposes us to the knowledge that culture, personal history and the physical conditions under which we grow do mould us.
In fact, they organize parties just to socialize and meet other people, who are of the same social status as they are. However, although Laura is rich, she shows concern for other people, as well, especially to the workmen who designed their garden for the party.
This is located in Chicago. While the family’s shift to a house which it owns signals an increase in the social status that it enjoyed in society, the same cannot be said about the protagonist. Estrangement from herself follows and the protagonist is unable to come to terms with her changing mental and physical self.
The novel itself has a structure of different vignettes that are not either full stories or full poems. Esperanza narrates the vignettes using the first person present tense. The vignettes are not the same in contents; each is a story of its own with both poetic and narrative features.
Feminism and the inner characteristics of women are revealed in them. Readers are touched by their tales as some relate to the main characters and can pin point some similar events in their real life situations. Most of her stories touch Mexican-American cultures, feminine struggles, poverty, and family that have resemblance to her life.
