The CIA created Osama bin Laden Perhaps, the Osama Bin Laden was the biggest debated in global politics in recent times. The 9/11 world trade centre attack and the subsequent developments in global politics have put Osama at the centre point of global politics. A lot of wars were conducted after the 9/11 incident and Osama was responsible for many of these wars. For example, the war on terror is still going on in Afghanistan even though it was stopped in Iraq. The major objective cited for war on terror by America was to eradicate terrorism from the world. America declared that Osama and his allies were doing terrorists activities across the world, operating from countries such as Pakistan and Afghanistan. Osama Bin Laden was born in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on March 10, 1957. His father was a close friend of the ruling royal family which helped him to establish the Bin Laden group of companies. Immediately after the birth of Osama, his parents got divorced and he was brought up under the single parenthood after the separation of his parents. In Saudi Arabia, it was allowed to the Muslims to marry as much as girls. Osama’s father had ten wives. During childhood, Osama was a normal child who has shown immense interests in religious activities. The development of Osama from an ordinary person to the most wanted hard-core terrorist in the world, was surprising unbelievable. Osama Bin Laden was a Saudi citizen by birth. He was a multi billionaire by birth and had major shares in the Bin Laden group of companies which was established by his father. He was not a born criminal, but the society made him as a criminal. He was a hard-core terrorists even before the 9/11 attack on America. However, he became famous only after the 9/11 incident. It is often said that America is responsible for the making of Osama as a terrorist. It should be noted that Soviet Union has intruded into the territories of Afghanistan in the 1980’s. Soviet Union’s presence in Afghanistan was indigestible to America. Intense cold war was going on in between America and Soviet Union during 70’s and 80’s. America estimated that Soviet Union’s presence in Afghanistan would give them upper hand in the policy matters in Asia. Therefore, America did everything possible to expel Soviet troops from Afghanistan. America has taught Osama and his company that communism is the most fearful enemy of religions such as Islam. The presence of communism or Soviet troops in Afghanistan would convert Afghan society from a religious society to a communist society. Osama and his allies took the words of America seriously and started terrorists’ activities against Soviet troops in Afghanistan with the help of America. In short, America has direct and indirect responsibility in the making of Osama as a terrorist. This paper analyses America’s role in the making of Osama as a terrorist. After the completion of the schooling from Al Thanger model school, and graduation in economics and business administration from King Abdul Aziz University, Osama Bin Laden has taken a civil engineering degree. He was a hard working person during his earlier tenure as a professional, even though he was never ready to dilute his religious beliefs. He was interested in interpreting the teachings of Quran and Jihad during his early life in Saudi Arabia. Religious fundamentalism is often cited as the reason behind the making of Osama from a normal person to the most wanted terrorists in the world. It should be noted that Saudi Arabia is a country which is famous for religious fundamentalism. Even though the world has advanced a lot in terms of religious beliefs, Saudi society is still adamant as far as religious beliefs are concerned. They consider anything against the religion as an unpardonable offense. In fact many of the Saudi people believe that the killing of enemies of religion is a sacred act. Obama’s development as a criminal or terrorists should be considered under the above circumstances. According to Osama Bin Laden, “Jihad gives licence to indulge in all sorts of aggravated sins”(Laden and Berner, 2006, p.13). Osama was successful in giving different interpretations to the word Jihad. He empowered the public that jihad is the licence given to Muslims by God or Allah to fight against all kinds of evil acts. In his opinion, the major reason for the struggles suffered by Muslim people at different parts of the world was the activities of evil forces. He started to view all the political activities and religious clashes happening at different parts of the world against Islam as convincing reasons for conducting jihad. America has used this attitude of Osama against nonbelievers cleverly. It is often said that bin Laden was funded by the CIA. Report in British newspaper, The Guardian states: "In 1986 the CIA even helped him [bin Ladin] build an underground camp at Khost [Afghanistan] where he was to train recruits from across the Islamic world in the revolutionary art of jihad" (Bin laden links to the CIA). America has played the religious cards very well to make Osama hard core terrorist. America has given armoury and enough training to Osama in his fight against Soviet Union in Afghanistan. At that time, America never believed that one day Osama would fight against them. America failed to calculate the long term effects of injecting religious fundamentalism in the veins of Osama like religious fundamentalists. America’s immediate goal was to expel Soviet troops from Afghan’s soil at any cost. America did succeed in exploiting the in depth belief of Osama in Islamic beliefs and the Soviet Union forced to withdraw its troops from Afghanistan as a result of the efforts of Osama and Taliban groups. However, rest is history now. America’s efforts to attack communism through Osama, hit them back like a boomerang now. Osama has turned his target towards America after the expulsion of Soviet troops from Afghanistan. The intrusion of Soviet troops in Afghanistan has helped America to change the pro-Soviet stands of the Muslim world. Until the intrusion of Soviet Union in Afghanistan, the Muslim world, especially the Middle Eastern world was in good relationships with the Russians. However, the intrusion of Soviet Union in Afghanistan helped the Americans to change these favourable attitudes of Islamic world towards Soviet Union. America taught the Muslim world that communism was not good for any kind of religious beliefs in this world. In other words, America empowered the Muslim world that the communism is the number one enemy of the religions and it is the responsibility of all believers to fight against the intrusions of nonbelievers. The American funding, which went exclusively to the Afghan mujahideen groups, not the Arab volunteers [bin Ladins groups], was supplemented by Saudi government money and huge funds raised from mosques, non-governmental charitable institutions and private donors throughout the Islamic world. Most of the major Gulf-based charities operating today were founded at this time to raise money or channel government funds to the Afghans, civilians and fighters. In fact, as little as 25 per cent of the Monet for the Afghan jihad was actually supplied directly by states(Burke, p.59). It should be noted that America has sound relationships with Saudi Arabia. America’s historical relationships with Saudi Arabia helped them every much in assisting the terrorist groups operating in Afghanistan against the Soviet troops. In the name of charity, America has showered billions of dollars to terrorists in Afghanistan through Saudi Arabia. In other words, Saudi Arabia worked as bridge in between Osama led terrorists groups and America. America never anticipated that they were digging wells for themselves, while helping Osama and his allies. Immediately after the expulsion of Soviet Union from Afghanistan, Osama became a strong critic of America. This was because of the political situation developed across Middle East when Iraq or Saddam tried to conquer Kuwait and attack Saudi Arabia. Saudi authorities sought the help of America to protect their territories from Saddam. However, Osama was against this proposal and he offered his troop’s assistance to Saudi Arabia’s protection. Osama’s offer was rejected by the Saudi administration. They sought help from America. Osama was afraid of the intrusions of a Christian country like America in a Muslim country like Saudi Arabia. He anticipated that America’s presence in Saudi Arabia would destroy Saudi’s culture and religious beliefs just like Soviet Union’s presence did to the Afghan culture. Osama tried to convince the Saudi authorities that America’s presence in sacred places like Mecca and Madina is not good for the Islamic beliefs. He argued that nonbelievers should not be allowed to enter sacred places like Mecca and Madina. However, neither America, nor Saudi Arabia listened his words which forced him to start his fight against America. Thus Osama became the enemy of America and Saudi Arabia after America’s intrusions in Saudi Arabia, even though that intrusion was intended to help Saudi Arabia. From the beginning of the Afghan jihad, Saudi intelligence used religious charities to support its own unilateral operations. This mainly involved funnelling money and equipment to favoured Afghan commanders outside ISI or CIA control... "The humanitarian aid-that was completely separate from the Americans", Badeeb recalled. "And we insist[ed] that the Americans will not get to that, get involved--especially in the beginning," in part because some of the Islamist mujahedin objected to direct contact with Western infidels. In spy lexicon, each of the major intelligence agencies began working the Afghan jihad--GID [General Intelligence Department, Saudi Arabia], ISI and the CIA-- began to "compartment" their work, even as all three collaborated with one another through formal liaisons (Coll, p.87-87). To conclude, America has a definite role in the making of Osama Bin Laden from a business and religious person to a hard core terrorist. America has funded Osama and his allies immensely to fight against the Soviet troops in Afghanistan. America has extended their aids to Osama and company with the help of the Saudi administration in the name of charity. Moreover, CIA has done many things to help Osama and company in their fight against the Soviet troops. America has empowered Osama and company that communism is the number one enemy to all religions in this world. America’s intentions while helping Osama was only to expel the Soviet troops at any cost from Afghanistan, even though they used the religious cards. They never anticipated that Osama may turn towards them one day, and cause immense damage to them.
