Autobiography I was born and raised in Korea and spent 12 years of my life over there. I still remember the taste of the first hamburger I had at Burger King on the first day I spent in L.A. After landing in L.A I spent my first two weeks in an empty house while vacuum cleaning the house for three times a day. The first day of school I learned a lot even though I was deaf and mute. It was a great day with my classmate Katherine teaching me the word “necklace” by showing her “neck” and “lace” on her skirt together.

These incidences are all deeply embedded in my memory as clearly as if they happened yesterday.Getting into ESL class in middle school was quite fruitful for me as I started speaking in English with the help of this class. I think it was during the high school years that I did get to have actual conversation with people with this new language. The high school I went to was Clark Magnet High School in La Crescenta. The school paid great emphasis on computer science and technology. The first turning point of my life I experienced was due to the Animation class offered in the school’s curriculum.

I chose to go to CSUN as soon as I graduated high school since it was close by my house and also had Animation courses to offer which I was most interested in. For tuition, I decided to work on a part time job. My friend assisted me in finding a job at the same place where he was working. I was hired as replacement to my friend as my friend had to discontinue working there due to his class schedule. The job was to teach students in after school program. Spending time studying for animation and hanging around in Game Club and Animation Club at school with friends who shared mutual interests along with teaching students on the other hand as a part time job were the most precious experience I had in my life.

It was my father who advised me to take double major in Art education while I was majoring in Arts. This was because he observed the enjoyment I experienced while working with children. I was of the idea that it would be better to concentrate on one subject rather than chasing two hares. The next turning point I experienced happened almost unexpectedly. During the internship at Universal Studio and Cartoon Network in my senior years I was offered a job opportunity as a production assistant. That was the most brilliant opportunity I could have ever had at that time.

I declined the offer and I could not understand at that time why I declined the offer. I was still unsure regarding which majors I should pursue and what career path I should follow. After graduate college, I accepted my father’s advice and decided to go back to school to get teaching credentials. Before going back to school I had already worked for two years as web and graphic designer. As I decided to try out my new path, I worked on my art lessons at after school programs, at church, and at volunteer opportunities.

The kids followed up my curriculums more than I expected, and they came up with creative ideas and projects. These ideas and projects surprised me as I never believed that kids could be so creative. That was how I gave one and got a hundred back; and it became a new milestone for my path. By experiencing numbers of trial and error while taking credential program, at time I experienced discouragement and felt that I might fail to be an Art teacher for the worst. However, whatever I become, I believe that I will do something to do with teaching students as long as I keep in touch with my formal students who are in college now.

It is a passion that I have and that is what I am going to do. My ambition and plan as a secondary art teacher is to teach and influence young potential artists in positive ways so that they can appreciate art and keep it with them for themselves in their entire lifetime. I truly want them to do that because I have my own experience of how much it makes ones life wonderful to live.
