Fundamental Elements: Progressive Society In contemporary times, equality is one of the fundamental elements for a progressive society. It is evident from several historical events denies the framework of equal legislation on the basis of races, gender and classes. These are one of the major factors of social strain in the society that has lead to unequal distribution of rights. A strong and successful society is the one that promotes equal distribution of rights to all individuals belonging to different races, gender and ethnic background. Throughout history several social movements have raised concerns relating to civil right, genders to raise consciousness about the rights of minority groups. Researcher indicates importance of race, gender and classes through sharing their personal experiences, analyzing the society, historical event or referring to current issues in the society. In a similar manner Andersen and Collin in their article ‘Why Race, Class and Gender still matter’ make use of several articles and researches to determine the influence of race, class and gender in American society (Andersen and Collins). Different researchers interpret significance of race, gender and class in the society in various manners. The main objective of this paper is to discusses the sources that the author make use to develop an argument. It shall further analyze the appropriateness of sources to support the argument present by Andersen and Collin. The article ‘Why, race, Class and Gender still matters’ develops understanding of the reader that three factors are interrelated experiences that have structured United State’s society. One of the sources used by the author is ‘A different Mirror’ by Ronald Takaki (Takaki 58). The book provides in-depth understanding about the perspective of minority groups in America. It presents the idea, emotion and expression of minority groups experience as being a part of multicultural America. Ronald makes use of different national identities, songs, letter, telegrams; photograph to develop understanding about the different ethnic group has experience in United States. However, Ronald has shares experience on emotions, focusing on the public attitudes towards minority groups, attitude and behaviors in the different situation. The source can be identified as one of the effective sources to support argument of Andersen and Collin, as both look into the multiple points in the history to develop understanding about the perception. In addition, it discusses the ruling structure of America that can provide in-depth understanding through comparison of historical events and current practices in America. The second source ‘Chappals and Gym Short: An Indian Muslim Woman in the Land of Oz’ by Almas Sayeed shares the experience of a girl who struggles hard to make her family understand about her future goal. In her book, she shares the experience of Indian Muslim Woman who desires to attain the status in the society through educating and working, but his father persuades her to get married. Almas aims to focus on the life of a girl who suffers from social strains and prejudice mindset of his family and father. The article tells about the gender role that prevails in the strict communities (Sayeed 263). The source explains one aspect of a woman in the society, and however it does not elaborate about other challenges that woman encounters in his life. The source can be effective to understand the experience of a woman in the strict society and her struggle to lead her life. However, it does not provide a complete overview about the other gender discrimination in workplaces, schools, etc. it limits the role of feminist character as it is more focused towards the obstacles she faces from her family, but there are several another resistance in the society that have not been well incorporated in the source that makes the scope limited to explaining gender role in society. ‘Missing people and others’ by Arturo Madrid is a personal biography of a citizen of America. The sources raise the question about the native Indian American that was raised in America (Madrid 55). One of the major aspect, the source, focuses on is the lost of identity she experiences. Besides of the fact, that she and her ancestors have raised in Untied States but still she is being discriminated on the basis of her physical appearance, speech patterns, name and profession that have led her to think about her actual identity. The source is useful to understand the stereotype and mindsets of individual that develop perceptions in the minds of individuals for minorities. Symbolizing minorities on the basis of skin color, language, religion, surname, etc. has leaded several other citizens in America to rethink about their originality. The source compliments the argument presented by Anderson and Collin as it provides justification on several circumstances and ground that tells about the mindset and stereotypes prevailing in American society. The book ‘From a Native Daughter’ by Hunani-Kay Trask (1999) explains with strongly historical references to develop understanding about the illegal administration of United States about Hawaii (Trask 21). The source can be effective to develop understanding about acknowledge, honor, citizen empowerment and provides in-depth understanding about the perception and strengths of the variety perspectives. As Anderson and Collin shares aims to convince individual to change their mindset. The source can be effective to understand the typical American perception about Native Hawaiian, and to understand historical events that have formed different perspectives for Hawaii. The source also provides information about Native Hawaiian tradition, local knowledge and finding that can be effective elements to change and encourage spirits of Hawaii. However, it does not provide overall information about the minorities that are facing challenges in America; it is because the source mainly focuses on Native Hawaii. From the above information, it can be concluded the all the sources have presented interpretation about the race, class and gender discrimination through sharing personal experiences, social structure and various other aspects of the society. However, some of the sources that are used by Anderson and Collin did not focus on the overall issue of Gender, Race and Class. Trask, Madrid and Sayeed only focus on a certain perspective of the society due to which overall racial, gender and class issue has been addressed. Works Cited Read More
