T: Oho never mind there is a party next week at my house. Say, would like if you could make it too then. M: I’ll try ma best mate although haven’t got much time to party like crazy what with my old man hell bent on making me study like crazy all the time. T: Wow your damned studies really scare the hell out me but sure we could manage to grab a sandwich and have lunch together? M: Not now mate. But could you not mind lending me some super thrilling movie sometime? because if you do not, I’ll beat the crap out of ya and I already starve for some entertainment.

T: Right bud don’t you dare ruin my damned movie. Right then, luck and ciao. M: Ciao. Speech in context of talking to family Me (M), Father (F), Mother (Mr) F: Hello Monti. Come sit down and have some lunch. It sure is bad to study on an empty stomach. M: Well thank you Father for the offer but I do not feel hungry really. Mr: Come on now Monti dear. You will have some. M: Ok if you insist. F: What is this Monti. In what hurry you happen to be? Take your time to chew every bite patiently. The way you are shoveling your food down your throat will not do you any good.

M: Sorry Father. Sure I’ll take care. However, there is something I want to share with you people. There is a party next week at my friend’s place and I’ll need some money to attend that occasion. F: How on earth will you manage to come around the fact Monti that your exams are nearing and any such sort of activity in such critical times could seriously interfere with your future prospects. Mr: My son, your out of question indulgence with pleasure has already done you excessive harm in the past and we could not allow such an activity presently.

M: But I would really freaking appreciate if you could at least think about broadening your damned horizons a little bit. And pass me the damned potato mash. F: Watch your tone Monti. I am your father, not your regular friend. You can’t talk to me like you talk to your friends. M: Sorry, I realize that. I should understand who I am talking to. Sure there should be a difference between talking to parents and to friends. Mr: Being considerate and thoughtful is always very important. M: I acknowledge this too and with that, I’ll ask for a leave since I have to study a lot.

F: Yes, you may leave now. Good luck. M: Thank you. Part B The difference between the two talking styles is apparent from the above two speeches. It is quite obvious from them that a person is and should be capable of speaking in more than one styles. The more speech styles one is capable of mastering, the better because ultimately this art helps one phenomenally in adapting to versatile situations. Myriad issues can occur if a person appears to be at lack of acknowledging different speech styles.

Conflicts can rise due to people getting angry on unsuitable language style. It is a fact that our different experiences in life have got a lot to do with the different language styles we use commonly while communicating with parents, friends, superiors at work, or strangers. Such differing styles arise from the knowledge speakers have of the language which is “a knowledge of rules and principles and of the ways of saying and doing things with sounds, words, and sentences, rather than just knowledge of specific sounds, words, and sentences” (Wardhaugh, 2011, p. 2). It is highly important to take care of the
