Writing Today by Richard Johnson and Sheehan Charles Paine Part 1 and 3 Part one of this book begins by a brief introduction into the aspect of writing in which the writers are taken through concepts of designing the topics to write about, genres of writing, purpose of writing, and the angle by which to write. In this context, the part seeks to present an analysis into the aspects that must be considered in order to consider the context from which one is supposed to write from. As such, it would be essential to ask a question, whether it is significant to engage critical reading with perfection in writing? Again, what are the core goals that would drive writers to write literary pieces that would be easily recognized by the readers? In this, it would be easy to note that the book strives to show that writing can be engaged with in an entertaining manner; thus, making it to be easy to read, comprehend and apply dynamically to various aspects of life. At this phase in the volume, it is interesting to note that the authors clearly follow the guideline they provide by making the text brief, quick to navigate and easy to scan. In part three of the book, the main concern for the authors is in relation to the process to follow in developing a piece of writing. As such, it would be obvious to yearn for knowing the precise course of action to pursue in achieving successful writing, but still afford questions such as how can one invent ideas? How can writing be organized and a draft formulated out of the general ideas? And, what are the core reasons for revising and editing a piece of writing before publishing it? In seeking to answer these questions and similar ones in the two parts, the authors present readers with case scenarios that entail the understanding of the nature of writing and the requirements for the development of a literary writing, as presented by the frequent headings and numbered lists of items. Part 4 This part is largely concerned with the determination of the various strategies that are used in the shaping of ideas when writing literary pieces. This segment is imperative in the logic that it provides the playwright with insights such as on how to develop paragraphs for the text being written, how to develop various sections for the paper, how to use rhetorical patterns in the development of a literary text, how to use argumentative strategies in the development of ideas in one’s writing and how to have the writing piece developed exposed to peer review and collaborated by different writers. Largely, this is one the most critical parts in the book, given the significance it plays in the defining the various contexts that are to be drawn in the improvement of a literary text. However, this section presents certain questions in the manner of how can a person know that they are developing appropriate paragraphs and sections for their writing? How possible is it to have one’s writing rejected by the peer group in seeking for their evaluation and collaboration in writing? What additional strategies need to be put in place to ensure that writing is developed with adequate argumentative points? The answering of these questions as are discussed in the book’s part four would critically aid in the ensuring that the form of writing that is developed is of the nature that enhances coherent communication of ideas, concepts and constructive arguments by writers. No piece of writing can ever be successfully achieved without the ensuring that adequate writing strategies are employed, and advice sought for from the right audience. The audience advice on strategies is sought from during the writing of the text would greatly influence the nature of writing output that is given to the final readers given that both have similar contexts and would depend on the relayed information in the writing piece to make informed decisions regarding the knowledge contained in the book. Part 6 This part is anchored on the successful achievement of part 4 and 5 in the book. In the contemporary world today, the usage of internet in conducting forms of communications is the order of the day. Mostly, the involved persons are not aware of the potential that social media can enhance their social networks; thus, become valuable to their attainment of writing objectives. The success of a book in terms of publication, production, distribution into various stores and the sales made from the book will largely depend on the rate of social networking that the writer makes with the external and immediate world. As expressed in the book, I perceive the greatest role of social networking as for the creation of a portfolio for both the author and the product/book that is being presented to the market for sale. It is refreshing to note that the manner of presentation deployed by the author will greatly influence the rate at which the writer succeeds in presenting their work to the prospective readers. An understanding into the concepts being expressed by the authors in the book Writing Today is that of an ensured organization of the literary texts that persons seek to publish, regardless of the nature or form to which they want the same done. Therefore, one would tend to wonder and ask questions such as whether the failure to adhere to the strategies as outlined in the part would lead to an automatic failure of presentation of ideas by the author of a particular book? Chapter 10 This chapter is a collection of the various commentaries and arguments as presented by various individuals in relation to the context of this book, and the various articles that each wrote in addressing various issues. The larger part of this chapter is based on the means by which a writer can generate their own commentary. A commentary in this context is concerned with the understanding of what one already knows and applying the same in developing research concepts into what other people know on a particular subject matter (Paine & Johnson-Sheehan 790-810). Subjectively, this subject of developing a commentary is based on the manner in which one organizes, drafts, introduces, explains, and clarifies their position on a particular matter in relation to the commentary of their book. A good commentary should also be ended with the conclusion that should be able to identify the various means by which a writer shall be able to achieve the various concepts to be portrayed in the book.
