Introduction Chicago Chicago being a metropolitan and among the popular cities in the U.S., it is the third largest state in the country. It has a phenomenon history in business where it inhibits the busiest international airport in the world; in cultural activities it boosts of some inventions in arts and entertainments and above all, in tourism, it holds a record of hosting the highest number of tourists in the world in 2012 (Rich 71).The thesis statement is evaluating the key economic determinants of the success story of Chicago city. Culture Activity Chicago is better known for the invention of various forms of arts in the entertainment industry. In comedy, it started the improvational style of amusement, in architecture the prairie design, and a variety of contemporary music like the jazz, soul and romantic blues. The city has a deep rooted liking for the classical songs. The city also has contemporary music best known for its performing music moguls in the world. Apart from music, it hosts dance competitions which attracts performers from other states as a way of promoting its art in the city (Koval 66). Through the immigration of various ethnicities in the city like the Europeans, Asians, Africans among others; the city enjoys a mixture of different traditions from dishes to artistic works. The fine arts sector has been majorly boosted by a number of award winning artists through their paintings. The city has numerous theaters including the renowned Steppenwolf Theater for the performing plays. The city hosts annual theater awards for recognition of the contributors in the fine arts industry (Koval 111). From the historical beginning of the town, there is a strong tie in Christianity especially the Catholics. It was majorly contributed from the immigration of Europeans who later transformed the town in religion and civilization. Chicago has a number of ancient but unique delicacies in the food industry. The Maxwell hotdog is a unique hotdog which was just prepared by mere steaming or boiling with raw onions and mustard, and is still sold in many food joints. In sports, the city has a wide range of games but most notably in baseball and basketball games. The famous Michael Jordon contributed significantly in winning various titles for the Chicago Bulls (Koval 75). Business Chicago is the third largest state which contributes enormously for the US gross national product. According to business reports, it has been known to have the most balanced economic growth among the other states of America. This is because it has vast incomes from transportation, finance, commerce, technological and telecommunications centre. In transportation, the O’Hare International Airport has the busiest transactions globally with enormous railroads and highways connecting to it (Rich 56). For Chicago being listed the third most important state in America, there are a number of awards to justify the report. The famous MasterCard, through its MasterCard index named Chicago as the most significant business hub in the world. From 2001 the metropolitan area has bucked six consecutive annual awards for being the state with the most new upcoming corporate enterprises as well as the highest number of companies expanding their operations in the city. Lastly, in the Science and technology industry, the city was ranked the first for being with the highest number of technological specialists in the entire country (Rich 116). In the financial sector, Chicago business district is the second largest through the presence of the big banks and the stock exchange bureaus. Its financial sector significantly boosts the local government’s income and the national’s gross income through its huge profit making mechanisms (Rich 81). The city has a huge labor workforce from its population of close to ten million citizens, who significantly contribute to their high returns of income. The labor industry is widely important in every aspect of the business economy. In the manufacturing sector, there are a variety of international companies which have their headquarters in the city. In healthcare, there is the Baxter International, in Aviation the Boeing and in Agriculture the famous machinery company, Archer Daniels Midland (Rich 125). Chicago also houses the world’s renowned people of all times including the past and the present. For example, Dankmar Adler who designed the Wainwright building which was the first skyscraper in the world; and Jacob Bolotin who was the first blind physician to be licensed to practice medicine in the world (Rich 178). Tourism In the year 2002, Chicago was awarded the visitation award where it had hosted the highest number of tourists that year than any other state in the world. At that particular year, the city recorded 46.4 million visitors which made it rise to fame. The domestic citizens were the majority visitors while the foreigners were the least from the total number of visitors. Out of the total domestic visits, sixty percent of them were for leisure purposes and the remainder was business visits. This feature depicts the citizens’ attitude on domestic tourism which is not the case in some developed countries (Pacyga 45). At that particular year, the local government’s income rose close to 14 billion dollars. The local government’s income is vital for its diversified number of projects that need to be facilitated by the income achieved. There are also several of historic sites which draw visitors from outside and within the state. Some of them include the Chicago cultural Center which contains the new and ancient galleries, historical exhibits and above all serves as the information center for the visitors. Initially the centre used to serve as the national library but which was later expanded to accommodate extra services like the ancient galleries (Pacyga 88). The city also hosts a number of amusements parks which attract tourists majorly from the local residents. The park has annual festivals which are aimed at celebrating their national heritage. Chicago also prides itself in the entertainment industry through the development of the first Ferris wheel to be constructed in the world (Pacyga 102). Conclusion Chicago is one of the major prides of the US government. This is considerably contributed by its culture which values its traditions and which the locals strive hard to uphold and develop. The nation’s economic sector has also been greatly contributed by Chicago’s incomes through its business operations and, the domestic and foreign exchange achieved through tourism.
