Writing Argument Writing Argument The two issues that the Nicholas D. Kristof and Vandana Shiva are talking about in their essays include global warming as well as degradation of earth and soil. These two issues are quite distressful for the people living throughout the world and even in my own community. I am a citizen of United States of America and one would think that problems in other regions such as India do not have any effect on my community. But the reality is that United States of America and India are in trading relationship with each other and United States of America is heavily dependent on the agricultural goods and services of India and if the agricultural produce of India continues to decline then the food security of United States is under immense threat.

These two issues are of immense concern because these issues affect our health and wellbeing in a negative manner. The issue of global warming can lead to food crises and malnutrition. Due to global warming some regions may experience decrease in rainfall and due to this various agricultural lands may not be able to attain enough rain to produce agricultural products such as grains and rice that are essential for the survival of human beings. Similar is that case with degradation of soil (Epa.gov, 2015).

Degradation of soil can result in the decrease of agricultural products that are essential for the life for every human being in every community. Kristof states that global warming is causing changes in the weather and due to this various crop failures have been caused (Kristof, 2012). Shiva states that due to neglect of soil the soil is losing its fertility and this has led to decrease the production of important parts of diet including mangoes (Shiva, 2010). 2. In the essay titled as Soil vs.

Sensex, the author Vandana Shiva has made a claim that the earth which is and which has always provided India and its citizens with the essentials of life is being ignored and more importance is being given to the industrial sector of India. The author does not make a general statement but uses proper reasoning along with evidence to prove the point the earth and the poor farmers along with the natural gifts are being neglected even though these elements are sacred to the people of India. She states that people and especially the rich in India is considering Sensex (stock exchange of Mumbai) to be more sacred than the earth.

To prove her point that the earth is being neglected she states that 200,000 farmers have already committed suicide and their homes and livelihood are being replaced with luxurious homes being built for the rich (Shiva, 2010). Furthermore she uses examples to prove her thesis. She uses the example of poor farmers not having access to seeds to produce food and at the same time the seed manufacturing companies are earning hefty profits. 3. In this essay the author is trying to persuade the audience that it is necessary to stop neglecting the earth and it is even necessary to consider the earth as sacred for the wellbeing of the citizens of India.

She has used the persuasion techniques of ethos, logos as well as pathos in an effective manner to appeal to the audience to take action. The author of the essay is quite credible in the eyes of the audience because the author has tremendous amount of background to talk about the topic of environment and how environment is being ruined due to industrial practices. She has worked as an environmentalist for several years and has even led several protests to confront those who are hurting the earth.

She was the one who founded the Research Foundation for Science which led to the development of a national movement called Navdanya and this national movement was developed to gain the protection of various living resources such as seeds that are produced in India. In the essay she uses the emotional appeal to tap into the emotion of fear in order to make the audience afraid of the health issues that the citizens of India are facing as a result of neglecting earth and not eating organic food.

She states that the number of people suffering from diabetes in India is increasing and consuming inorganic food is causing several other diseases (Shiva, 2010) . This is quite an effective way of persuading the audience because the audience is the general population that does not want to suffer from health diseases and would take action to protect themselves and their children. Furthermore she even uses logic by using facts and figures to persuade the audience to take action. She has stated that more than 200,000 farmers have experienced death and are suffering from malnutrition due to earth being neglected (Shiva, 2010).

She has quite effectively used these figures because the population of India has an emotional connection with the farmers. In India the farmers are considered as annadata which means that the farmers are considered as important individuals who provide food to the Indian population (Shiva, 2010).
