The second definition was constructed based on the three conceptual frameworks that include adequacy, security of tenure and control to space. In essence, homelessness poses a serious health, social and psychological risk to an individual and the society (Kennett & Marsh 2010).
The beginning of homelessness can be traced back to the era of colonial rule in America. In 1640, the English vagrants were considered as outcasts people and the police were looking for them. These homeless individuals were often called sturdy beggars, and they were found everywhere in the colonial towns. A pointing example that existed was in towns like Philadelphia and Baltimore that had several homeless people than any other town in America. The main cause of homelessness at that time was the war of King Philip, which was against the native people. Currently, several people are still homeless due to various reasons. Some of the major causes of homelessness include poverty, war, natural disasters (floods, tornados), prisoners who have been released and re-entry to society is hard and forced eviction of people out of their residential areas.
The effects of homelessness are devastating to an individual as well as the society, the effects range from health, social to economic impacts. Regarding the effects on health, homeless people often encounter several problems with their health in that their health get worse daily because of exposure to cold and other dangers. The dangers predispose them to develop diseases such as skin diseases, cardiopulmonary diseases, malnutrition, mental illness and drug abuse among others. When the homeless are taken to hospital, they often stay for a long time and they occasionally do not pay that ultimately translate to the government increasing health expenditure to cover them. Children seem to be most important community upon which homelessness problem affect seriously. Government, social organizations and individuals should combine well and act effectively to eradicate homelessness related problem from the world. This paper briefly analyses various dimensions of homelessness problem and suggests some recommendations to avoid homelessness.
Homelessness is one of the major problems in the United States. The person experiencing homelessness not only suffers from poor financial conditions but also suffers from prejudice and discrimination against him. It has been observed that lack of job and severe poverty leads a person to experience homelessness.
The definition of homelessness varies from region and the legal aspect of a nation. Generally, it is described as the condition of individuals without habitual residence. According to the American government, homelessness includes people who sleep in either public or private places unfit for use as a regular dwelling for human beings.
Homeless has impacts on people in different ways depending on an individual’s personal circumstance. The human rights commission has placed homelessness under violation of human rights. The commission explains that access to safe and secure housing is vital human rights that every human being, rich or poor, and should enjoy.
The post-Civil War era showed a considerable growth in homelessness because of the negative economic effects of the war and the subsequent recession (“War and Homelessness” 1). While World War I saw a decline in homeless veterans, succeeding wars contributed to it, from World War II and the Vietnam War to the Gulf War (Tsai, Mares, and Rosenheck 27).
This interaction may lead to disagreement due to diverse perceptions on how to attend things and when they should be done among others. These disagreements led to the introduction of theories, which try to elucidate why people in a certain society may be in a state of conflict.
Reports indicate that contagious and respiratory diseases have been rampant among the homeless people. Moreover, due to poor living conditions, homeless people suffer from other types of diseases caused by poor hygiene. Homelessness as a problem is however not a naturally occurring phenomenon.
This research emphasizes that homelessness in the United States is very important and essential issue. After years of economic decline and war, the ranks of homelessness have increased significantly to include families with children (35%), persons fleeing domestic violence (30%), the mentally ill (20-25%), children (25%), and military veterans (23%).
