Outline Richard Rodriguez (Scholarship boy/girl) Agree Introduction: In the modern times, education is critical to the success of every individual. Often at times we find ourselves studying away from our families and immediate societies. Students tend to spend most of their time in school and hardly spend time with them. This leads to students being pushed away from their parents, and instilling new ways of life. Body 1 In order to succeed, students are required to spend a lot of time reading. For example, the author managed to succeed academically because of reading and studying at the expense of forgetting the family (Rodriguez, 598). For example, I have interacted with friends currently in this school and have admitted that they have never visited their families in years. Some even admit to forgetting their native languages. Body 2 Education makes us better than our parents, and with time, most students tend to distant themselves from the parents (Rodriguez, 600). This is because they want to continue to have more education so as not to be like their parents. In this sense, education enlightens in ways that make us see our parents and our past to be outdated, and we imitate our teachers and those around us. Personally, I have had problems interacted with some members of my family who do not have the same level of education. This has distanced me from them and my traditions. Conclusion Although education is good in preparing one for the future, it has a negative effect on the family life of the student. It distances us from our families and our traditional values by taking most of our time. Disagree Introduction The need to fit into the modern society has made education an important aspect of human development today. One of the most important aspects of education is its ability to expose us to different worlds and different people, thereby expanding our knowledge. This exposure helps us to connect with our families better, and provides us with opportunities to enrich our cultures and values. Body 1 In the article by Richard Rodriguez (1982), the author argues that education has distanced him from his parents and traditional culture. For example, he notes that he started to spend more time reading, and began to “idolize” his teachers and started to imitate their accents (Rodriguez, 601). Unfortunately, the author does not recognize how education brings people closer to their families. For instance, I have used the time in school to read more about my culture and way of life. I have used this knowledge to interact with my parents and other family members. Body 2 Unlike what is reported in the article, having new knowledge can increase familial ties. For example, in the article, the author notes that when his mother would ask him what he was reading or about his new courses, he would keep quiet (Rodriguez, 602). On the contrary, such information, when shared with the family, helps in increasing these ties. For instance, whenever I meet my parents or siblings, I take that opportunity to explain to them what I have learnt during the semester. Conclusion Education is a powerful tool that binds us together. Through education, one develops the necessary social skills that enhance his familial ties. The concepts learnt in school can be used to connect with our families and close friends, and at the same time enrich our cultures. Paulo Freire (Banking concept and Problem-posing) Agree Introduction The relationship between a teacher and a student greatly affects the quality of education received. In the article by Paulo Freire (2005), the author rightfully observes that the relationship between the teacher and the student is like that of the depositor and depositories. Without active involvement of students, it becomes difficult for education to be meaningful and transformational. Body 1 First, this form of education assumes that people only exist in the world and are not active members of it (Freire, 260). For this reason, education does not bring change in the society since the receivers and givers of knowledge do not communicate with each other. In the example of my current school setting, many of the concepts taught are not well understood, and therefore no meaningful change is achieved. As the author notes, problem problem-posing education is revolutionary (Freire, 265). Body 2 Secondly, the banking concept of education enhances oppression. This type of education encourages people to submit to the majority, and this gives the majority the license to continue to oppress (Freire, 260). In the modern world, very few people are standing up to take action because of the problem of banking type of education Conclusion In order for change to be realized in the society, there is the need to adapt a more interactive and involving type of education, this education should be centered on communication and problem solving as opposed to the commonly used banking form of education. Disagree Introduction Education is supped to prepare an individual for the demands of the outside world. The method of instruction used greatly influences how knowledge is transferred. By using the passive learning approach, it becomes convenient for large groups of students to be taught and large volumes to material to be covered. Body 1 In the article by Paulo Freire (2005), the author argues that passive or banking form of education does not allow students to critically consider reality (Freire, 259). However, this is not the case because students can use the given material to learn more about the world and undertake further individual studies Body 2 By using a passive form of education, the classroom becomes easily manageable and the teacher has maximum effective control. In the article by Freire, the author proposes that the problem-posing approach be used. Unfortunately, using this approach will create disorder, especially considering the modern classes which are characterized by hundreds if not thousands of students. Conclusion Although the passive method of education might appear outdated, it is effective in ensuring that students cover huge volumes of material in class.
