? Sustainability plan put forward by the organizers of the London Olympics Executive summary Everybody desires to have fun in sport both as participants and spectators. Just like in any other sport, Olympic Games are regarded as one of the major events making history across the world, which most countries around the globe always covet to host. However, because of its complexity hosting Olympic Games requires a strategic plan and sufficient arrangements to ensure that all the attendants have been taken care of. London Olympics has not been exceptional. Being an event which was meant to take duration of six weeks during summer, organizers had to ensure that everything is taken care of ranging from waste, effects of biodiversity to health matters but most of all they had to demonstrate to the world the best a host nation can take. Organizers of London Olympic games had put sustainability into their heart to ensure sufficient demonstration on how games can provide a chance to show case changes on how people live, perform their duties, building styles and business practice to the beneficial of a healthy life within the limit of resources available on earth. The London Olympic strategy was laid through a subdivision into groups, assigning each group with its own responsibility and managed by a committee. The committees were to execute over the raising of funds, planning infrastructural development and provision of legislation in governance to ensure that everybody from the United Kingdom at least benefited from the Olympic Games. Introduction London Olympic Games and the Paralympics games hosted in 2012were to be used beyond what is just done in sports, but to enable people around the world to develop a sense of friendship and to facilitate sharing of culture as an attempt of exposing diversity (Great Britain 2007). The organizers based their strategies on economical, social and environmental sustainability. Other than the influence on sports, London Olympic Games organizers incorporated different authorities and assigned roles to ensure that playing of games was to create a perpetual legacy to all its citizens. A number of strategies were placed forward to ensure that games influenced all the communities residing in United Kingdom by creating job opportunities, enhancing business infrastructure and providing training in different areas to improve the life standards. However, these strategies were narrowed down to address the areas of climate change, waste disposal, biodiversity, infrastructure development and provision of health (Brebbia 2013). Biodiversity Biodiversity has become one of the major vital elements in sustenance of the environmental economy. It serves a basic duty of enhancing balance of the climate changes, ensures sustainable maintenance of the water catchment areas and embraces the available natural resources making them sufficient to support life and make it desirable (MacRury and Poynter 2009). The Olympic movement in the recent years has taken it as a priority to ensure that environment is made sustainable for all the inhabitants. The London Olympic 2012 organizers made it as a provision of maintaining the ecology by promoting the relevance of natural environment. With assistance of international sports centre and the United Kingdom, the Olympic organizers managed to improve different number of sites including the lower Lea valley. After the amendments of some laws to give way for improvements, the organizers thereafter developed most sites as a way of enhance diversity (MacRury and Poynter 2009). For instance, at Lea valley nature plant seeds were collected with a motive of sustaining indigenous plant species. Quite a number of reptiles who resided within the valley under natural circumstances were relocated to appropriate sites. The organizers also created artificial nests of some birds as a way of safeguarding species of birds like the kingfisher whose population were dwindling rapidly. Inclusion Inclusion involves the culture of breaking down ethnic barriers that are associated by different communities and availing to the society adequate opportunities that are brought by games. To a broader perspective, it concerns majority of the people who are not fully fledged by sporting activities from religion, race and color, to gender variance. The London 2012 Olympics arrangements were based on the foundation of a diverse community. The organizers made an inclusion of all the stake holders in the society as a way of demonstrating fairness, peaceful coexistence, and integration amongst the people living within the United Kingdom. As a matter of illustrating coexistence, the organizers enabled the show casing of diverse culture of the United Kingdom by allowing the culture of Olympiad and practicing of games (Great Britain. Parliament. House. 2007). The sense of equity was showed by incorporating disabled participants into the Olympic events. The business society was also not left out as the organizers exposed bids for open tenderness, which were meant to create avenues for employment. During preparation for the development of the park, communities around the United Kingdom were consulted a sign that indicated that they were vital stake holders to the event and society as a whole. Health A person’s health is one of the most important aspects in life, the potential health of a person is determined directly with what is within his potential such as the kind of food that he takes, the physical practices that one does and the environment where a person stays. Involvement in Olympic and Paralympics as one of the Sports are considered as one of the ways which promotes physical fitness of individuals and other elements of healthy life. The London 2012 Olympic Games was used as one of the ways to improve the life expectancy of the people around the Olympics stadia whose life spurn were considered to be seven years less than those who were dwelling within the central business district. In order to curb health expectancy, the organizers improved standards by practicing health a safety during construction of the Olympic stadia games. Other improvements were brought about by cleaning up contaminated environment and polluted streams but most of all, sufficient consideration with were put in place to regulate emissions along competing ways a sustainable advantage to the community. The 2012 Olympics organizers allowed the community to participate in the games; this was a considerate attempt to improve their health standards by ensuring games which offered health inspiring expressions. Waste management Life sustainability on earth is based on reduction of e-products that are considered harmful to the environment. Reduction of carbon gases into the atmosphere is regarded as one of the considerate measures of sustaining life (Theobald and Buckingham 2003). Disposal of wastes such as biodegradable substances by burying them in the ground are one of the practical ways of reducing carbon emissions into the space and this reduces them into other forms of gasses which are less harmful. London 2012 Olympic organizers made sufficient precautions by ensuring proper waste management mechanism. A six method practical approach was developed to ensure that less fund was spent as a way of developing micro efficiency in waste disposal and putting in mechanism which enabled recycling of wastes (Theobald and Buckingham 2003). In consideration to reduction of wastes, there was facilitation of education through public and other forms of medium as a way of sensitizing the public on the right methods of waste disposal. Modern technology was used during the construction of the Olympic stadium making adequate provision for waste disposal for both the Olympians and the disabled participants as a way of sustainable environment management. Some of the items which could be reused were however, sterilized under extreme hygiene conditions and later reabsorbed for usage while biodegradable substances were buried in soil, decomposed and later distributed to the society as a way of improving soil fertility to enhance crop production. Organizing team placed proficient provision to the suppliers by ensuring that they engaged licensing authority to control the bidders to come to terms with responsible sourcing, to use secondary and healthy materials (Theobald and Buckingham 2003). Climate change Scientifically, there is a stronger perception that a climate change is of serious danger and a big threat to our lives. The numbers of carbon emissions into space, carbon moxide gases produced by the engine locomotives, electricity generation activities among others, are the oblivious factors responsible for the climate change (Brebbia 2013). With a motive to mitigate unnecessary carbon emission and adapt to responsible elements of the climate change, the organizers of the 2012 Olympic Games made responsible considerations from construction to embracing projects that would minimize green house gas emission as a way of ensuring healthy environment during Olympics and later in future. The timing of the 2012 Olympics games was based in summer when there was an imminent forum and education in relations to adapting responsible environment change. The forum was meant to address global public awareness and to the people of United Kingdom about the effects of waste of the climate change. Sufficient transport consideration was put in place to cater for sudden consequences brought by rising seas water levels and flooding that may be incurred by rain. In the aim of reducing carbon emission, considerations were made to use rail and water ways to transport construction and waste materials. Buildings designs were also customized to reduce the consumption of water and energy (Brebbia 2013). Besides, a number of projects were also put forward to address the issues of climate change. Review on how 2012 Olympics organizers played a role model for future games Every movement currently along the streets of Stanford city cannot exempt noticing clear evidence that the organizers relayed sufficient efforts to ensure the Olympics sport remains a dynasty forever. Vast land which had been destroyed by mining and other related activities was transformed into vegetation and water ponds to be used as tourism attraction sceneries (Musgrave and Raj 2009). Such areas finally became sustainable educational research spots meant for entomology and ecological study. London 2012 Olympic and Paralympics hit the headlines as the first Olympic Games host city to incorporate sustainable plan in measuring the games’ carbon foot prints from the actual date they had won the bid prior to duration of five years when the games were to be concluded. Olympics delivery authority, who had the mandate of foreseeing the strategic plan, invested some sufficient amount to assist in the reduction of carbon emission in schools and local homesteads. This was done by providing of low energy lighting and switches to assist in time of emergency power blackout. London 2012 Olympic made history by providing acoherent result of low carbon emission. This technology can now be used by most companies to larger scale as a way of the demonstration to the society that they can operate more sustainably. The development of Get set an interactive website for games, opened up to offer training to school children aged between 3 and 19 to find more about Olympic games and its importance to the society. The organizers of Get Set site are currently doing possible explorations to enable other NGOs, libraries and other organizations make it of good use and beneficial to the society. Opinion survey of the aspect of sustainability chosen From a simple aspect of research, the Londoners had conflicting controversies as most of the residence had a perception that hosting Olympic Games would give them a task of extra budget. However, some of them saw it as fewer burdens of proof since the strategies were laid to distribute the cost evenly amongst the tax payers of United Kingdom. Concerning the derelict land which had been destroyed by mining related activities, a number of students admit that indeed their renovations has led to the expansion of institutional boundary for research to study insects and their population distribution especially at then Leah valley. Majority confirmed that the strategies which had been laid down by the Olympic delivery authority to reduce carbon emission into the space succeeded since their implementation was taken over to a wider scale by Coca cola Company, which was a sponsor of the event. A few number of students dismissed tree planting exercise, which was a break through event in restoring biodiversity as there were some other alternative solutions which could be used to achieve this. Conclusion The London 2012 Olympic strategies are seen a success since it has brought substantial growth to the United Kingdom. Its’ GDP escalated tremendously, and its extent had been evidenced from the point bidding took place, currently and is meant to stay forever. Tourism sectors have been developed. Besides, a good number of construction companies from London have worn international contracts to develop sports units across the world. Bibliography: Brebbia, C., 2013.
