? 23 March Soccer Injury: “Trrrrang . trrrrang …… trrrrrang . trrrrang”, my phone rang. I was hearing the phone ring trrrrang trrrrrang with half closed eyes. Oooh, it hurt! I could still see red beads of liquid ooze out of the cut, and merge into the threads of the dressing. The yellowish white dressing had soaked the blood to its full capacity. Any more bleeding that occurred would show up as plain blood. Bleeding was too much for the dressing to take. The dressing needed replacement. Either the dressing was insufficiently made at the outset, or else, the injury was too severe to keep the blood from oozing out even after 30 minutes of the incident. I was lost into recapitulating the painful moments when I had gained the injury when suddenly I heard the phone ring again, “trrrrang . trrrrrang”. With my left hand, I picked the phone up. The screen showed Martha, the maid. “Yes, it should have been her. What did mama pay her for if she did not do the service now? O yes, may be I can avail this opportunity to ask Martha if mama and papa have been told about the incident,” I thought. The air was wet. The fog had clouded the air. The sky was white. I could not see across two feet of the radius of the circle of which, I made the center. I could not feel my nose. It was chilled and red just like the pores of my fingers. My hands had gone numb. I extended my hand towards the tip of my nose to touch it. At one point, my hand would not go further. But it had still not reached its destination. My nose kept waiting for the finger tip to approach it, but it never did. I had no mirror around me to see what had happened. “Find it, find it”, I ordered my finger tip. The tip was trying its best to obey me, but it finally gave away after trying for long. I had dropped my arm. I again extended the tip of my finger towards the tip of my nose. This time, with more determination and self control, again, my finger tip reached where it principally should have been, but there was no nose tip. Also, the tip of my nose never felt touched. It was worrying me. “what’s goin on?”, I thought, “Either I have lost my finger or my nose, one of the two is lost for sure.” I rushed back towards my dormitory, making my way through the foggy path to look into the mirror and find out what was wrong. In a matter of five minutes, I was standing in front of my dressing table in my room. “Ahhhhhh … hahaha”, I screamed with joy and excitement. Both my nose and finger were perfectly fine, and my finger was resting over my nose. Soon, I began to feel the two as well. The warmth of my room had reactivated the sensory cells in both the organs. The redness faded and the sensation enhanced. The unbearable cold outside had made me so numb that I could neither feel my nose nor my finger tip when the latter pressed against the former while I was out. “It must be freezing cold today,” I realized. I walked past the kitchen and appeared into the gallery to read the temperature that my thermometer hung in the open displayed. It was -4 degree centigrade. Now I exactly knew why my finger was not approaching my nose tip. “It is going to be an extremely tough match today,” I thought. The match was due by 10 am. And the clock showed half past 7. There were two hours for the match to approach. I was all set to show how talented I was in the match. I had been a loser for long. My team had lost three matches in a row because of my poor performance. Everybody said that I did not practice sufficiently, and so did I feel about myself. Last time, though I had not displayed extremely nice performance, yet it had been way better than what it had been in the first too matches, and it was too much practice that had improved my performance, yet the practice was not enough to make me win the match. Since the time I had lost the third match, I had practiced just too much. I imparted major part of my daily routine to practice. I really felt that I had matured as a player in the recent days. That day, I was feeling completely in form. Everything was alright on my part, though I had no control over the weather that was not suitable for the match. Yet the match could not be delayed because of certain administrative reasons. “Today, I have a chance to recompose my lost image of a soccer player. I will not let my team down. Today is the chance, do or die, I have no third way to go,” I thought. The match was just at a distance of two and a half hrs from where I was till then. Tic tic tic tic tic I heard the seconds needle speak with every single move it made. The coffee I had made was rapidly cooling down as the heat exchanged with the fog in the air. When I had put it on the table, it was fuming. Now that only five minutes had passed since then, the fumes had all vanished, though occasionally, a vivid cloudy fume could be seen escaping from the liquid. It was still hot enough to be enjoyed. The idea of making coffee came from my desire to give my metabolism a boost prior to getting in the field. I trickled the coffee down my throat in three big gulps. After having the coffee, I exercised for about an hour. After the exercise, I was feeling all set to conquer the land. At sharp 9 o’ clock, I stepped out of the main door. The sun had sufficiently settled the fog down. I could see clear through the air. The weather was bright and yellow. The sun gleamed at me and wished me success as I walked my way up to the ground. It was a fine morning in the April. It took me no more than 20 minutes to approach the ground. I was the first to get there. Other team mates approached after me. Up to 40 minutes past 9, nearly all of the team had gathered in the ground. The opposite team had also reached there. The players were jumping, jogging and making metabolism boosting moves. Some were hanging from the pole upside down to make the blood rush towards the brain. I made mini jumps at my place just to make sure the energy level built through the whole hour of exercise sustained till the match would start. At sharp 10, the umpire blew the whistle. As soon as the whistle was blown, the battle started. I was at the forefront. I had taken the ball and was making my way through the crowd to the goal at the opposite end of the ground. I felt like I had taken a nice start. Every successful player started that way. I managed to get the ball to the goal and secured my team 1 point. My team mates jumped and thumped one another with extreme joy. They felt like they had found the lost Disuza. After 10 months, I was playing like a real Soccer player. All this while, I had maintained a very low profile and my team mates were skeptical about giving me a chance in this match. But I promised them of displaying a good performance, and so I did. After the first goal, I became enthusiastic about the second. This match meant a lot for me. I had taken it on my nerves and to win had become the matter of my ego. In an attempt to catch the ball, I jumped higher into the air than was necessary, and landed on it upside down. “Thrrraaaaash….,” My shoulder rubbed against the grassy carpet. I was immediately caught in severe pain. I seemed as if my shoulder had dislocated. I had received many bruises on the skin of my right arm because of excessive rash and rubbing against the floor. The thorny grass had pierced through the nerve of my hands, and my right arm and hand were bleeding excessively. “Shrrrreeeeww …… shrrrreeeww”, it was the last sound I heard that came from the whistle of the umpire, and the next moment on, I lost my self. I became unconscious. I do not remember what happened next. How I was picked up from the ground? Who took me to the hospital? Who dressed me? These and several other questions kept emerging in my mind from time to time. My friends told me they had taken me to the nearest hospital where I was given first aid treatment. After about half an hour, I was awakened by the telephone ring. I had just awakened from the state of unconsciousness. I picked up the phone and asked her if she had told mama and papa about this. She said she had conveyed the message to mama and papa. I cursed her for having done that, because I did not want mama to know about this all. Mama had always advised me not to be so enthusiastic about the Soccer, and told me to instead concentrate upon my studies. One two days ago, she was sent my result card that showed how bad I had performed in the exams, and today, she came to know that my unnecessarily excessive passion for Soccer had not only ruined my grade, but also landed me into bed with my right arm dressed. However, some part of me did want this news to be conveyed to mama and papa because I wanted them to be with me in those moments of pain and agony. “Tuck tuck tuck tuck …. Tuck tuck tuck tuck,” someone knocked the door. I said, “yes please,” It was mama and papa. They had brought me fresh roses, and hugged me. Mama said, “Disuza, this is what I always warned you about but you never listened to me.” I realized how wrong I had been to not have listened to the advice of mama. I promised her that from then onwards, I would pay due attention to my studies and would leave playing Soccer. My dream of winning the match had after all, already shattered, what was left? Nothing!
