? Assignment Answers Question Comments on Jane Austen’s movie “Sense and Sensibility” in 1995 The movie “Sense and Sensibility” is based on the novel by Jane Austen. Although is can be considered to have a common storyline, the film had been successful in catching and keeping the attention of the audience. There are different elements that can be viewed in the success of the film. One is the fact that it did not try to merely translate the novel but it tackled the story through a particular perspective. This is important since it is known that book to movie is commonly a failed feat. By presenting the movie on a particular perspective which is a unique interpretation of the movie, it can both honour the novel and free the movie of the expectations based on the text. Another element is the success of the film in highlighting the manner of the novel or the talent of the writer. In the movie, one of the most important components is the dominant and character of the heroine which in the particular novel of Austen are representatives of sense and of sensibility (Lee, 1995). Question 2. Analysis of Glamour Plot of “Pride and Prejudice” Pride and prejudice is another movie that is based on the novel by Jane Austen. It is known and described as having a glamour plot. There are essential points in the glamour plot of the novel as well as the movie. One point is the setting of the plot which is 18th century England when the top priority of the parents is to marry their children to rich families to be able to have a favourable position in the class-oriented society. Another point exhibiting the glamour plot of the story is the extravagant settings of every scene. In a general perspective, the story which tackled a family with 5 daughters can be viewed to have 5 lavish marriages to the rich family. This had been achieved in the plot with the focus on the two sisters who met their rich husband during the course of the story. Thus, it is composed of the different social events that creatively described the details of the social scene during the said period (Bevan et al. 2005). Question 3. Comments on Social Journal in the “The Sydney Morning Herald” One of the sections of The Sydney Morning Herald is related to the society and culture. In the article written by Parnell Palme McGuinness “Battle of the binge-thinkers” a current issue had been discussed. Basically the main purpose of the Social Journal or any social article is to present different view and issues in the society. In the article different current issues had been touched such as the royal wedding and the effects on the various social aspects of the problem. The royal wedding is one of the issues that affected the activities of the people. Another is the social and political aspects of the said event. Due to the influence of the people involved in the event, most people that are invited such as Julia Gilliard took the time to attend for both social and political interactions, but are ware of the issues discussed (McGuinness, 2011). Question 4. Comments on “Carbon Tax” issues in the “The Sydney Morning Herald” Carbon tax is a continuing topic in the Sydney Morning Herald for the past few months. One of the latest comments related to the issue was made by Abbott. According to him the carbon tax will lead to the deterioration of Australia’s economy by causing the lost of jobs in the country. By putting more difficulty to the operation of services, the carbon tax, according to Abbott will eventually lead to the failure to maintain a first world status. Many would agree on Abbott’s view specifically based on the lack of clear plan in the federal government’s side (AAP, 2011a). On a personal note, although the statements made by Abbott can be considered upfront, the government should at least have a clear view, plan, and resolution on the issue. This is important since the issue had been in question for a number of months already and that it is related to various aspects of the society. Question 5. Comments on “Public fury over flood insurers” in the “The Sydney Morning Herald” In terms of the conflict between the insurance companies and the flood insurers, the main notion that can be observed is the lack of proper communication and point of agreement. The insurance companies are very focused solely on the business perspective of the situation that they fail on considering the situation of the insurers. On the other hand, the flood insurers are focused on solely getting that they want, which in this case is full flood coverage (Lutton, 2011). On a personal view, a compromise on both sides can be the best solution, although it is true that the flood insurers are free to seek other insurance companies that best suit their needs. On the other hand, the main concern of the public regarding slow action from the insurance companies should be given attention and priority. Question 6. Comments on “Japan dumps radioactive water into the Pacific” in the “The Sydney Morning Herald” Japan expressed that the news on dumping radioactive water from the nuclear plant affected by the earthquake and tsunami were true. The main reasons are the inevitability of the situation since there are no other choices that can resolve the problem of excess radioactive water from the facilities. Another reason is the slow implementation of the plan to establish other storage options that can resolve the problem. In addition to the statement made by the Japanese government through Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano, it had been expressed that the radioactivity will not affect marine life due to the quick dilution of the waste in the ocean (AP, 2011a). The issue on dumping of any waste in the ocean is already a serious concern. The case of Japan is a more serious one because of the radioactivity of the waste. In issues related to the environment it is important to consider the solution that would least affect nature since it can ultimately affect human survival. Question 7. Comments on “Ocean life can handle radioactive water: experts” in the “The Sydney Morning Herald” Experts presented reasons related to the matter that ocean life can handle radioactive water. One of the reasons is the fact that it is diluted when disposed in the ocean. Another reason is the lack of evident effects in ocean life since it is inevitable that the radioactive water sips to the ocean ever since the event happened (AP, 2011b). Both reasons that were presented by experts are questionable though. The first reason which is dilution in the ocean is an over simplistic view that favours the act of disposing the waste to the ocean. It is a common view that every action done towards nature especially the negative ones can ultimately cause damage one way or another. One example is the concept of bioaccumulation wherein effects toxic materials ingested by small organisms in the water can be amplified when eaten in large amount by larger animals. The second reason which is the lack of evident effect is an ignorant point since effects are needed to be intensively examined before concluded. It is common that effects can only be observed after a long period of time. Question 8. Comments on “Osama revenge may come anytime, says govt” in the “The Sydney Morning Herald” The government warned the people to be more careful in possible revenge that can be undertaken by Osama bin Laden supporters that can target the Western people. The warning specifically targeted the Australians residing in other countries. A statement made by the Islamic Friendship spokesman Keysar Trad though reassured the public (AAP, 2011a). Such warning from the government is important specifically based on the different conflict occurring in different parts of the world. The statement of the Trad is also important and reassuring but cannot answer to the opinion of the whole population specifically since Osama bin Laden does not conform to their rules, thus, it is possible that his supporters share his views. Question 9. Comments on Agatha Christie’s play “The Mousetrap” The Mousetrap is a play written by Agatha Christie in 1952 which had been presented ever since in the West End of London. It is famous for the murder plot with a twist in the end (Christie, 1954). The play had been recognized for decades based on different reasons. The first reason is the plot of the play. It is uncommon during the time of the play that a criminal mystery is being explored in the plot. It expressed both the talent of the author and the historical perspective of the era. Another reason is the length of the play. In just 2 acts, a suspenseful and exciting story had already caused and made the audience think. The third reason for the success of the play is the twist in the end which is not revealed to future audience thus increasing the element of surprise. Question 10. Comments on “Britain braces for royal wedding bill” in the “The Sydney Morning Herald” The citizen of Britain questions the extravagant wedding of the future leaders of the country. This is due to the great economic difficulties being experienced by the people in Britain specifically related to education ad employment. The cry of the people is based on the fact that the wedding cannot be considered as a public event or one that is related to the state. Even if the royal families would reason out that it is their own resources that they are spending, it is a fact that part of their income comes from the people (AP/AAP, 2011). It is hard for the people in Britain to endure hardship when there is a large amount of economic and financial resources being spent lavishly in just a single event. Although they respect the royal family, practicality in times of economic difficulty is still important specifically since leaders are meant to serve the people. References AP (2011a, April 5).
