The word “Third World” surfaced in the awakening of the Cold War almost immediately after the end of WWII. Contrary to what most people believe, “Third” did not mean the lowest economy or economic status. “Third World” meant all the non-aligned nations. “First world” referred to USA and its allies, while “second world” referred to USSR and its allies (Ninkovich, 22).
