This can be seen in the fate of Aeschere who is dragged off by Grendel’s mother, and torn to pieces, leaving his head to terrify his comrades. I suspect it may not have been very easy to be a soldier in Beowulf’s army, because he seems to have a poor grasp of the danger he is putting his troops into.
