This paper is aimed to compare and contrast two distinctive interpretations of the “home” concept, expressed in the essays “At Home. For Now” by Richard Ford, and “Homeplace” by Scott Russell Senders. The main thesis of the paper is that both authors convey their sense of home in drastically different ways. Fords vagabond viewpoint allows him to drifts on a search for what fits the definition of “home”, while Sanders sense of community and responsibility is connected with physical place.
Both authors are similar in what they both have had moving through various places during a life... , so their understanding of the “home” were formed without a long belonging to one village or a town. Both of them agree that nowadays it is not something uncommon to change places of living, especially in America. Sanders even considers that the mobility is the particular national characteristic of Americans, whose “Promised Land has always been over the next ridge or at the end of the trail, never under [their] feet” (173). Ford, explaining his numerous relocations, asserts that he is “just an ordinary fish aswim in a confluence of swirling currents” (183).
