8 million people in the UK that are diagnosed with diabetes, it is estimated that around 850,000 people in the country are unaware that they have this condition (Diabetes UK, 2009). Generally, those over the age of 40 are more likely to be at risk of type 2 diabetes, but for South Asian and black people, their age of higher risk begins at 25. However, all ethnicities show an increased incidence of diabetes in children and adolescents (Diabetes UK, 2009), and after musculoskeletal disease, cancer, and cardiovascular disease, diabetes represents the fourth most significant cause of death in all age groups (Dunning, 2003).

To review the literature for this essay the Web of Knowledge, Medline, BMJ and CINAHL databases were accessed, and restricted the search of research articles to those between 2003-2010 relating to self-monitoring of blood glucose in type 2 diabetes, the quality and outcomes of the framework for care for these patients in the UK, and screening for primary care. I chose to restrict my search to articles from 2003-2010 as these provide the most up to date information on current practice and research.

The articles analyzed below were chosen as they represent the best examples of the different forms of research (quantitative and qualitative).In total, ten articles, (which are detailed in the appendix), were critiqued.
