Usability Analysis of Accounting Software

These packages vary for use in terms of business size and operations. Larger businesses tend to have larger number of transactions and more employees which means they’ll need a larger package to cope with the demand of the business. The purpose of this project is to investigate the usability of various accounting packages available to accounting professionals. Although some large businesses and corporations tend to outsource their financial transactions like smaller businesses do in order to save money in the long term and concentrate more on their core business. Some businesses use custom made accounting applications and these tend to be huge multinational corporations. The project will obtain and analyze two widely used accounting software packages to investigate the application of various usability criteria in these applications. Keywords Keywords: Accounting, usability, interface, functionality testing 1. Introduction The success and wider acceptability of a software product depends heavily on it usability and user friendliness. Putting it simple, usability is considered to be the ease of use that the users of a software package experience. Akin states this concept in these words, “Usability is a software attribute associated with the ‘ease of use and learn’ of a given interactive system.” (Aiken, 2007, 306). However, in software development and testing the usability of software is required to be measured on some concrete criteria and therefore ISO 9421 defines it formally as, “The effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction with which specified users achieve specified goals in particular environments.” (ISO-9421, 1997)....

The usability evaluation is a rapidly changing domain in software development and the focus of the development is now shifting from the post development evaluations towards the early focus on users and tasks they would need to perform over a software package. Empirical measurements, that help to ensure usability through periodic simulations and prototypes, are being employed in software development life cycle (SDLC) models and more software development is growing more iterative in nature then it was ever before. Moreover, the heuristic evaluation is an important tool developed and refined during the last two decades of software usability testing. Heuristic evaluation gauges the usability of software against some existing standards and principals of usability and Human Computer Interaction (HCI). (Hvannberg & Gilbert, 2008, 346-352).

This report will analyze the effectiveness and usability of various accounting packages in terms of logical arrangement of the contents, efficiency and effectiveness, tolerance, consistency and reliability. The report will investigate usability through user interface and design including a detailed look at the functionality of the packages in order to pass a final verdict over the usability of the software packages. There are many accounting packages in the market and usability is one of the most important aspects that the potential buyers may weigh before purchasing the package. It is imperative for the success of this project to obtain access to various accounting packages. This can render a true reflection into the usability and design aspects of these accounting packages. ... Read More
