Download file to see previous pages In most UK banks, the CEOs come as the second in the chain of command or organizational hierarch after the board. The board was however not selected for the study due to the fact that the board is often made up of several people, making it difficult to critically study or generalize the leadership diversities of the board based on such discrete variables as gender and educational background. With the executives, however, it is common practice that each bank has only one executive, making it feasible to have a critical study of each executive based on the bank that the said executive represents. Again, the executives were selected because there are sufficient secondary data on them, including secondary data on their leadership diversities, making it easier for any researcher to undertake desk research on them (Landsman, 2007).

3.32 Sampling Procedure
Vaus (1986, p. 88) avers that secondary desk-based analysis does not need active sampling as compared to primary research since there is no fieldwork collection of data, but that the analyst must be careful to ensure that the secondary data selected for analysis has been collected properly with sound sampling methodology. To make this easier the researcher should always check for appropriateness of the data to answer the research questions (Vartanian 2011, p. 17; (McCaston 2005, p. 3) by checking its target population and variable conformity. The data set should have similar or comparable independent and dependent variables (Vartanian 2011, p. 18) as well as identifiers or keywords as the new research. For this study, the sampling method used was a probability random sampling technique, where all respondents within the population had an equal chance of belonging to the sample size (Boonyachai, 2011).

Vaus (1986) defines probability sampling as a selection of a sample where the researcher refuses to use discretion informed by predefined rules that fit the purpose of the researcher.
