Book Report Captain Cook Voyager between Worlds Captain Cook Voyager between Worlds is one of the biographies of the legendry Captain James Cook. It was written by John Gascoigne and published by Bloomsbury Academic in 2008. Unlike the rest of the biographies, this book is not about Captain Cook’s crew, ships, artists or the places he had travelled to. It is purely about how the captain’s childhood experiences influenced his views regarding the encounters he later had during his voyages. Having come from a Britain, Captain Cook had to confront lots of challenges because of the diverse cultural beliefs between him and the people with whom he interacted.

This caused lots of conflicts that he had to deal with as he traversed the world. The main subject of the book is intercultural relationship. Having come from different cultural backgrounds, Captain Cook and his crew had to conflict with the Pacific Islanders. As a young boy, Cook was brought up in an environment that made him to have a different view on sex, politics, religion, war and trade. For instance, while growing up as a young boy in New Zealand, he had learnt that agriculture was a good thing that could help him a great deal.

Later, as the story unfolds, we realize that this earlier beliefs came to influence whom Captain Cook would become during his voyages. To capture these issues, the author sub-divided the text into chapters like trade, worlds, sex, the sea, politics, religion, just to mention, but a few. After reading the book, I would like to report that it is indeed one of the most fascinating and interesting stories about Captain Cook. Its flawlessness and continuity made it impossible for me to be bored. So, I spent 3 days to go through all the 304 pages without ever quitting.

If it were boring, I would not have managed to complete it. The book is rich in stories, illustrations and several maps that could be relied upon to understand the Pacific and all the other places that Captain Cook had navigated. Nevertheless, I liked the language used in the book. It was a very simple and easier to understand. So, I never struggled to read the entire book. Had I not have other obligations, it would have taken me only 1 day to complete reading it.If I were to purchase this book, I would have readily dished out $30 because it is worth it.

It is rich in ethno history of the movements, interactions and accomplishments of Captain Cook during his navigations in the 18th century. It taught me that we are living in a culturally diversified society. Hence, to peacefully coexist, we need to learn to be tolerant and accommodative. This is an important lesson that, if utilized well, will have great impact on my life. For this reason, I recommend it to anyone who wants to have a deeper understanding of Captain Cook. It is relevant, valid, engaging, and accurate and has lots of illustrations, end notes and a long bibliography.
