However, we have yet to see a national law that will grant that opportunity across the board to the gay couples of America. What exactly is preventing our legislative body from passing a national law in support of state laws on gay marriage that already exist in 27 states? In order to understand their apprehension and why I personally support gay marriage, we must look into the political and religious arguments on the issue. The first argument against gay marriage is that it is a threat on the institution of marriage.

That is because marriage by definition and by law, is limited to the union of a man and a woman, no more, no less. By allowing same sex couples to marry, the word marriage would have to be redefined in order to reflect the change in the law. I challenge anyone who argues that marriage is an institution based only upon the relationship of a man and a woman to point out a bible verse that supports that belief. There isn't any. However, Tom Head ( “10 Really Bad Arguments Against Same Sex Marriage”) did manage to find the following passage from Romans 1:29-32: Therefore you have no excuse, whoever you are, when you judge others; for in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, are doing the very same things.

Obviously religious tolerance does not really have a place in the so-called Christian world because they are the very first to disobey their own teachings. The judge because they are afraid and they refuse to understand that which is alien in foundation to them. Marriage is indeed an institution but not a religious institution. Austin Cline (“Common Arguments Against Gay Marriage : Moral and Religious Arguments”) shed light on the issue by explaining that gay marriage is simply another part of the evolution of human society and therefore, an evolution in marriage as well.

Cline further explains that: the nature of marriage has varied so much that it is difficult to come up with any one definition of marriage which adequately covers every permutation of the institution in every society which has thus far been studied. (“Common Arguments Against Gay Marriage : Moral and Religious Arguments”) Based upon the above argument, it is safe for those who support gay marriage to deduce that marriage is not a religious rite but rather, a civil rite that should be sanctioned by the state and national laws of the land.

In countries such as Scandinavia, gay marriage has been legal for the past 20 years or so. Rather than weaken the institute of marriage as its opponents feared, gay marriage even increased and strengthened the marriage rights in the country. Alright, there are some who argue that gay marriage supports sodomy as a sexual act. Why has that turned into a debate? Sodomy was legalized in 2003 according to John Alamond (“10 Reasons Why I Support Gay marriage”) in order to prevent it from becoming a discrimination tool against gay men.

As Alamond continued to explain: Making sodomy illegal in the first place, is an intrusion of human privacy in itself. It is none of our business whether a person practices anal sex or not. If a person were to press the issue of sexual activity to a heterosexual individual, there would be a law suit for sexual harassment soon-to-follow. (“10 Reasons Why I Support Gay marriage”) Sexual preferences are considered to be a part and parcel of the private life of a person. Nobody has the right to judge that
