Extract of sample "Bastard out of Carolina"

Published in 1992, Bastard out of Carolina, is a narration about Boatwright family, the members of which spoil the lives of each other. The main topic of the writing is despair. The way of life of the family is not healthy and comfortable: the members are drinking, moving from one place to another, fighting with each other having no definite goals in life, except to find something to eat. The family suffers from poverty and thinks only about the ways to get some food and pay rent. From the book the readers can find out about betrayal in all its forms.

First of all, it is the betrayal in the relations between the dearest people, mother and daughter. The mother does not want to notice that her daughter is abused. The second form of betrayal can be easily found in the relations between two women that is expressed in love of Carr to Almas’ husband. In the book we can also see the manifestations of rage in the episode of visiting uncle Earle in the prison
