of the best pharmacists in our town and because she died during my impressionable years, I felt a need to page homage to her legacy by following in her footsteps. I was not going into Pharmacy studies armed with only the memory of my mother though. I had already spent 2 years working as a volunteer at HYPE Pharmacy. I was privileged to have been given a wonderful opportunity by the pharmacy staff to become highly familiar with the medications in stock and also, they provided me with excellent training and exposure in the field so that I could consider myself a “master” of pharmacy by the time my stint with them had ended.
I felt really good about the volunteer work that I was doing. It offered me an opportunity to honor my mothers legacy. This was something that I felt I had to do in order to make my mother proud of me. I sincerely thought at the time that failing to become a pharmacist would mean that I failed my mother too. I would have excelled as a pharmacist, there is no doubt about that. It paid well and covered my most basic expenses and then some. Most people would have already been satisfied with that career and stuck with it. Anything to pay the bills right? But it wasnt all just about meeting financial obligations for me. I wasnt having any fun on the job. I wasnt “loving” what I was coming to do every single day of my life. Most people say that if you stick with a job long enough, it will grow on you and eventually, you will find that you have come to love your current job. I waited and waited for that sense of “love” for my job as a pharmacist to come, but it never did.
My time spent volunteering at the pharmacy was now becoming a bane. It had become an obligation that I did not enjoy doing. It left me feeling disgruntled and unhappy.
