Kidney transplantation is one of the most frequently performed transplantation globally. Harm: The increase in the demand for organ transplantation has led to the rise of organ trafficking. Globalization, greed and inequality has resulted in a vicious cycle of organ trafficking. The increasingly integrated nature of today’s world has resulted in the rise of global organized crime of trafficking which involves “the transport of organs by means of coercion, abuse of power, deception, and vulnerability” (Budiani & Delmonico, 2008, p. 925). China is the only country in the world that uses organs of executed prisoners for organ transplantation (Scheper-Hughes, 2000).

This practice continues even today as rich foreigners in need for transplants flock t this country. This is yet another example of violation of human rights, Technology: One of the key areas of technology pertaining to organ transplantation is the transportation of organs. This technology aims to increase the window of time during which an organ remains viable for transplantation after it is removed from the donor. Current technology involves chilling donated organs in order to slow the degradation process.

However, transplantation still needs to be conducted within a few hours from the time the organ was removed from the donor. Smart Perfusion is a North-Carolina based company that is conducting animal trials by injecting or bathing organs such as kidneys with fluids that simulate the environment of the donor’s body (Evans, 2007). This technology, if successful will therefore drastically increase the window of time during which an organ remains viable for transplantation after it is removed from the donor.
