Pros and cons to behavioral theories/models TaskDatePros and cons to behavioral theories/modelsIntroductionThe undertaking in health education and health behavior seeks to transform acquaintance about behavior to strategies that are effective for enhancement of health standards. Behavioral theories have emerged because of deficiencies in trait theories. Successful health program initiatives are premised based on understanding behaviors in health and the framework within which they happen. The research provides an overview of behavioral theory used in expansion, execution and evaluation of health interventions.

Social cognitive theory and reasoned action theoryWhereas the social-cognitive theory, explains how people are involved in acquiring behavioral patterns whilst providing the intervention strategies, the theory of reasoned action predicts the determinants in health behavior (Sapp, 2004). The social cognitive model argues that human behavior is explained in requisites of dynamic, reciprocal and triadic models in which personal effects interact with environmental influences (Gruyter, Maddux, & Snyder, 2003).

However, reasoned action theory asserts that the purpose of performing a particular conduct is related to the actual performance of that conduct. It has been applied in health related sectors such as alcohol abuse, mammography screening, HIV tests, smoking and weight loss. In addition, reasoned actions seeks to predict ones behavior from the intentions to the relationships in behavior, attitudes and beliefs while social cognitive theory believes in the learning presumption through ideas learnt through watching and understanding personalities (Greene, 2000).

ConclusionParticipatory design of programs, assessment and research contributes to improvement and success in the health sector. It is imperative to assert that behavior change program addresses health problems and addresses health problems in a bid to complement intervention models in developing improved policies, environments and systems (Camerer, 2011).
