NON-TRADITIONAL CAREERS IN THE HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT
Introduction
Non-traditional careers in health information management are those job opportunities that develop and evolve outside the health information management department within the hospital setting. With the current technological advancement most firms, organizations, and agencies are adopting flexibility to fit within the specific industrial environment.
Traditionally, this profession has diverse job opportunities as medical record managers, trauma registries, tumor registries, risk management, quality improvement, physician’s offices, utilization review, compliance auditors, patient admissions, and release of information and transcription roles. However, the skills gained and the knowledge acquired does not limit them to the traditional setting but they transcend these settings. For instance, given a chance to identify a job in a nontraditional setting, I will prefer the insurance sector because of the following job opportunities.
Insurance health management coordinator
The coordinator works in the life assurance department where he is responsible for receiving provider-generated referrals for form completion, compliance with contract requirements, redirecting mental health authorization, and undertaking research on ICD-9, CPT, and HCPCS codes. The job needs a bachelor’s degree in medical records management according to the AHIMA advert on the website with RHIA and RHITA certifications. According to the AHIMA salary survey, this opportunity will offer approximately $30 000+ per annum as the starting salary. This job position is important as it will offer a flexible working opportunity. This means that as a coordinator I will link well with the clients and at the same time, the job's academicals requirements depend on the old academic qualification of medical records management which I will have an advantage with the modern degree course in HIM. . At the same time in the AHIMA website, it is indicated that most employers assure their workers as a motivation.

Insurance billing specialist
This position is based in the life assurance department where the coordinator is responsible for the completion of insurance billing, preparation and sending of all electronic medical claims and making follow-ups of unpaid insurance claims. This position requires one to know the reimbursement policies and computer systems. With a high school diploma in HIM and RHITA or RHIA certifications, one will be able to acquire the job. I would prefer this since with my master’s degree in HIM, I would be more comfortable with the $30000+ start-up salary. This job opportunity also serves a better interest as it will be outside the hospital boredom.
Health & benefits consultants
This is a position based on the health insurance consulting company. Marsh & McLennan companies describe the position on its website as a job position where the individual will attend client/ team meetings, support clients' team projects, and offer advice on deadlines. He will also offer support services about claims based on health information data to the client s who may be an insurance company or an individual client. The company offers a state life assurance and health license within the first three months of hire. This would be one of the driving forces for me to prefer this job. This position is not limited to insurance consultant companies only but is also open to self-employment. As an HIM graduate, I will prefer self-employment as a Health Insurance Consultant. This will make my boss who will determine my salary based on marketing and the quality of service offered.

Health Insurance Plan Builder
The health plan builder will be a Third Party Administrator in the Claims Operations Department. The position will maintain plan parameters in a specialized database for the new group. He will notify the management of any proposed changes by the health information management associations and the state health regulations. He will document procedures and offer medical knowledge before any contract and claims decisions are made. This position requires AHIMA certifications and computer literacy. To me as a master’s degree holder in HIM, this is the best job as it is a new position in the job market. This means that it has less completion as most companies employ based on only basic qualifications among them high school diplomas and AHIMA certifications only. AHIMA describes the nontraditional job settings as well as paying according to its survey. This translates to better pay for the Health Insurance Plan Builder. Read More
