The Psychobiological Approach to Understanding Pain - Case Study Example

This paper takes the failure of the exam as psychological pain. Scientists call this psychological pain. There is that inner interpretation about a failure in an exam that someone feels which psychological pain is.

Another case study was Cook County Hospital in the city of Chicago. (Sawyer, 2003). A doctor prepared a man psychologically on the pain that one feels undergoing surgery. The man never complained about pain perceived. This is because the man had prepared himself for the pain (Howard, 2009).

Scientists at the University of California used rats as their specimens. They tampered with the midbrain of a rat that is known to detect the volume of pain. It was noted that the rat could not react to intense or painful stimuli exerted on the tissue.

 Thirdly, discomfort or pain in babies can be released through soothing. When a baby falls from a height, he starts crying. The mother may use breastfeeding or a toy to make the baby cool. Through this, the mother is playing with the baby's psychology. The baby concentrates the breast or the toy, and it cools (Powers, 1999).

Fourth, in Harvard University, Henry Beecher that an article was comparing two people perceived pain in them. A soldier with bullet injuries and a civilian patient with the same injuries. He noted that in the battle there is more honor surviving with injuries than just normal pain. This depended on their psychology but not the volume of the injury (Beecher, 1956).

Conclusion

Pain as is explained by the paper is more psychological than physical. Situations passed by a friend may be physical or psychological. Whenever they engage their mind in something more interesting like reading a thrilling novel, they forgot about their pain. This is why the paper suggests that the pain is more psychological than physical injuries.
