Similarly, the author inclines the book towards historically important events such as the Roman civil war. This is seen through over nine hundred historical sources that have been provided in the text. However, there is some mention of the politician’s personal life. This is seen through his mentions of Cicero’s marriages and divorces to Terentia and Publilia. For example, Everitt states, “His divorce of Terentia and marriage to Publilia may well have been justified, but they leave him in a rather poor light (341).

” Cicero has been presented as an important figure in Roman political theory and intellect. However, the book features little mention of the politician’s scholarly works such as De Republica and De Legibus. Through the book, the historian’s core argument is that Cicero’s life as a politician and scholar was dedicated to the preservation of the Roman Republic’s government structure. Everitt articulates that Cicero believed that an efficient government was on that maintained a mixed constitution.

That is an administrative structure that incorporates the regime forms that are democracy, monarchy and aristocracy. 2. Based on selected history book(Cicero), provide in detail a specific event/ factor/ aspect of the historian's narrative that encapsulates his/ her thesis. The Roman system of administration featured all three forms of government. However, Everitt maintains that each aspect had its advantages and misgivings. Throughout the book, the republican system of government is seen to run efficiently.

However, the rise of Caesar brings about difficulties among the Roman senators. Cicero argued that Caesar wished for a monarchy in place of the Roman Republic. In that respect, the politician states that Caesar “forced the immediate election of a certain Caius Caninius Rebilus” following the death of the consuls (Everitt 277). He did this as a reward for the man’s service under him in Gaul. However, the senators and republicans were suspicious of Caesar’s actions, which served as the initial steps towards a monarchy.

In that respect, a monarchy was seen to bring about tyranny within government. It, therefore, could not run on its own. Through democracy, as seen in the institution of the Consuls, political acts could be performed in line with the desires of the people. Cicero noted that these institutions were powerful both in character and legal sanction (Everitt 193). The Senators provided an aristocratic influence in the state by validating acts of a popular assembly. Through the mixed Roman system, balance of power, therefore, existed between different actors.

Preservation of its structures was, therefore, necessary for the nation’s survival. 3. Based on selected history book (Cicero), answer if the historian did successfully argue their thesis? What do you agree with and disagree with and use specific evidence. In the literature, Everitt has arguably developed a functional thesis. The themes of the book are in line with Cicero’s arguments on the preservation of the Roman State and its forms of government. He presents several instances of evidence that highlight the need.

Firstly, he mentions Cicero’s writings On the State. Cicero described the Roman state of old as a beautiful painting. However, the politician explains that it begun to fade, and there was a need for preserving it. According to Everitt (194), Cicero advanced for the preservation
