How do these links demonstrate deep social attitudes towards the working poor? OTHER ANSWERS The economy changed drastically duringthe late nineteenth century. The expansion of railroad joined the country together into one market where goods could be shipped and sold across the country. The railroads also provided economic growth since it provided a large market for goods. It became the one of the first big businesses and helped regulate America economically, socially, and culturally.
Here we also see the growth of corporations or trusts that conquered many industries.

For example, Andrew Carnegie opened the largest steel plant, employing hundreds of workers. This affected many industries, and economic power was held by less people as time went on. We can see this in the image of JP Morgan. Only certain people had power and were able to have an effect on prices of different industries. Many companies were monopolizing the industries causing prices to increase, as we can see in the image where we see the people with trusts are in charge and everyone has to be subjected to whatever they decide.

Overall, the power of the trusts, or businesses caused many smaller businesses to fail. This cause many social and economic problems. From the above it is clear that monopolies ruled in industries and they owned the factors of the economy. This caused many laborers to lack good salaries and as the industries grew, people formed unions to protect them from the monopolies. The poor are left helpless as they cannot afford much as the monopolies set the prices of everything in the markets.2. During this time in American history anti-trust laws were yet to be instituted and the results were the rise of massive companies that would destroy any competition they would come across.

I believe the first image to depict JP Morgan’s control over the various industries that he did control and his desire to buy more companies. It depicts JP Morgan literally dragging the railroad and steal companies while showing his desire to constantly buy more business as a mechanism to have more social power. In the image we can see JP Morgan walking towards the for sale sign of the shipping boats. I believe the second image to depict the effects that the trust had on society, giving large amounts of power to a small number of people and making the public vulnerable to those powers.

It elucidates the business moguls’ domination of the working class and shows how vulnerable the business class was. The third link illustrates the living conditions of the poor people who were living in manhattans during the late 19th century. The link depicts poor living conditions and the hardships that the lower class faced at this time. With the prices in industries being controlled by monopolies and few individuals such as Morgan, the poor had no choice but to endure the hardships. They could not afford much and as the link shows, they lived under poor conditions.

This created social problems in that classes grew among the people of the owners of the factors of the economy and the poor.3. The first image represents big business and how JP Morgan dominated big business with corporate finance. You can see the name on his hat representing him. He also headed up industrial consolidation. This merged companies in other industries and cut down on competition. This created monopolies. He gained control of the Iron and steel industries. In this cartoon you can see the banner saying Railroad consolidation and Control of the Iron and steel business in us.

This is because He took control of it all, like in the picture. This Political cartoon was accurate of his actions during this time.
The second image is about trusts. Each big, powerful look guy wearing the sashes represent a trust. A trust is a large business, so each of these men represent a big business. On the one guys sward it says legislation, this was his weapon and used it against the others. The men on the floor must be small businesses. They are on their hand and knees struggling with things like citizens taxes, wages and interests rates for small farms.

This shows that big business is taking over and small business are struggling to survive. Forfeiting the money they make to big business.
The last image is a tour on a tenement. This is where immigrants were living. The small unsafe apartments would hold big families. Because wages were low and taxes were high people could afford to live in a space big enough for them. These places were unsafe and unsanitary. People were living so close to each other that sickness would spread easily. These building were also home to small businesses.

Because people needed money they would conduct business out of the apartments. Being able to support themselves. People moving here from other countries found homes in these tenements.
From the above, it is clear that the economy was not a safe place for the small business owners. The large scale owners who were few monopolized the industries and bought more companies living the rest with no market and in poor conditions. Business was only good for the monopolies. This was a great economic problem that created a separation between the monopolies and the small business owners.
