The massacre happened when the army renegade tried to disarm some men within the Pine Ridge Indian reservation and a shoot-out broke that led to the army indiscriminately shooting a greater number of the Indian population, resulting in their deaths. This event went down in history as the ugliest massacre on the native Indian population.

It is only fair for the Lakota Sioux men and the native Indian society that the federal government through necessary channels like the National Endowment for Arts or Humanities comes up with a symbol of peace for the purpose of cohesion between the two factions. A monument would be the most ideal symbol that can put together the feelings of the two factions and show signs of peace, healing, and cohesion of a once divided nation when the memorable day of December 19, 2015 comes. A monument would be the best form of restoring peace and cohesion while healing the bitter memories from the Wounded Knee massacre.

The sole aim of the monument is to symbolize a matter of national importance and amplify its importance to the society. Monuments are a vital in telling the history of a nation by symbolizing an event of the past while promoting a sense belonging and cohesion. A monument can either present a bad moment or a good moment that is significant in telling a story about the nation’s past. Foreigners can easily look at the monument and tell what it symbolizes in relation to the nation.
