His approach to issues has often been misunderstood to be unwilling to tackle issue affecting the nation. The good natured president, as many came to learn about him, has, however, done a lot for his nation that many seemingly have not seen and appreciated. During his tenure, he managed to end the Korean War, an achievement that many of his predecessors failed to attain (Ayers, 2009). Back at home, pressure over the end to segregation of race was mounting and was heightened by the case between Brown versus the Board of Education. He, however, managed to quell down the pressure by offering direction and support to the African American students who faced racial segregation despite the ruing of the courts. Though his intervention came later on after the protest, the action he took to resolve the situation is commendable. Analyze Eisenhower’s foreign policy or his domestic policy. Domestic policy President Dwight domestic policy was characterized by following the rule of law. He made sure that the people of America respected the authorities and more so the rulings made by the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court had made a ruling in the Brown versus Education Board case that segregation of race in public schools was unconstitutional. However, the Governor of Arkansas defied this ruling by ordering troops in stopping nine African American students from attending an all-white school in Little Rock. This action sparked nation-wide protest forcing the president to intervene (Ayers, 2009). It is the ruling of the president in this scenario that showed his commitment to the rule of law. He order Federal troops to maintain law and order as the African American students attended these ‘white’ schools. His domestic policy was, therefore, based on the respect of the rule of law. He believed that every American citizen reserved the right to be protected as stipulated in the constitution. Question 2 Assessment of Brown’s decision and Montgomery bus boycott to the development of civil rights movement Brown’s decision involved a court case between Brown and the Board of Education in the United States. The Supreme Court found out the racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional since it conflicted with the equal protection clause that is included in the fourteenth amendment. This means that African American students could be allowed in public schools that were persevered for the whites. However, this decision faced numerous challenges, which included protests from various parts of the state (Ayers, 2009). Montgomery bus boycott, on the other hand, was a civil rights movement that campaigned against racial segregation in public transport system. The boycott was sparked by Rosa Parks, a civil rights activist, when she was forcefully arrested after refusing to give her seat to a white person in a public commuter bus. The boycott resulted to a ruling by the Supreme Court that declared segregation of race in public transport system unconstitutional. These two events were particularly crucial to the development of the civil rights movement since they introduced significant changes in the constitution that declared racial segregation unconstitutional. The events also helped profile the plight of civil activist since they received considerable public interest including the attention of the president. Both events were crucial, since they both highlighted racial segregation, in different situations in the United States. For instance, Brown’s decision highlighted segregation in schools while the Montgomery boycotts highlighted segregation in the public transport system. These events were successful in championing the civil rights of the black community in America. This was made possible by the United States Court which made a ruling in their favor. In both cases, the Supreme Court found that racial segregation was unconstitutional and, therefore, declared segregation in public transit systems as well as public Schools to be unconstitutional. This implied that the African Americans had equal rights to use these services without discrimination. Identifications 1. Rosa Parks Born in February 4th, 1913, Rosa Louise McCauley Park was a renowned champion for civil rights. The African- American rights activist was often referred to as the ‘mother of civil rights movement’, due to her involvement in championing for the rights of the African American citizens in the Unites States. Her most memorable action during her time as an activist was in December 1st, 1955 in the state of Alabama. She refused to heed the instruction by a bus driver to leave her seat in the colored section for a white passenger because the white section was already full. This act of resistance was recognized all over the state, and many other activists stated emulating the same. Her efforts to fight racial segregation were recognized by activists such as Martin Luther King Jr. She has since been honored with several awards such as the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her efforts in fighting racial segregation (Ayers, 2009). 2. Charles Van Doren Popular for his television scandal in the 1950’s, Charles Van Doren, is an American born intellectual and author. He was born in February12, 1926 to parents Mark Van Doren and Dorothy Graffe. He was brought to the lime lite by the television quiz program ‘Twenty One’ for his outstanding performance over his other opponents. However, it was his confession to the Congress that he had cheated in the quiz program where he won the grand prize of $129,000 that increased public interest in him. He admitted that the producers of the television quiz show ‘Twenty One’ had given him both the questions and answers prior to the onset of the game. After his confession, he lost his post as an assistant professor at Colombia University and terminated from NBC. 3. "Domino theory" Coined between 1050’s and 1980’s, the Domino theory states that if a particular nation was overcome by communism, then the surrounding nations would follow suit just like a domino effect. The United States government embraced this theory and used it as a basis for their argument to justify their involvement in mattterss of other nations so as to stop the spread of communism. President Dwight, for instance, used the term ‘Domino effect’ in his speech once when referring to communism in Indochina. 4. Earl Warren Born in March 19th 1891, Earl Warren was an American citizen who held the position of Chief Justice and Governor of the State of California. He is fondly remembered for bring transformation in the American Law especially with regards to the rights of the accused. Among his most popular transformation is ending sponsored prayer in American public schools and instilling the one man one vote-rule of apportionment. He is also one of the longest serving Governor in California since he was re-elected three times (Ayers, 2009). 5. Sputnik It is the first man made satellite launched in space. It was launched October 4th 1957 by the Soviet Union. Its unexpected success caught the Americans by surprise and created a crisis, often referred to as the ‘Sputnik crisis’.
