So the change from a home he is used to, a life he is accustomed to, a life without his parents and to move to another part of the world is depressing. I was really saddened by the events of Little Tree’s life. Being a stranger in the region where his grandparents resided unveils him to the adversity of being a minority and the victimization that accrues to racism. He experiences that first hand, when his grandparents and him try to get a place on a local bus to the closest location to their home.

It is so much irritating that such treatment should be meted on one so young and one who has received unfair treatment from fate. Experience is what counts in all situations. His grandfather’s heritage comes into play as he is presented as one who has undergone such treatment for long. He calmly handles the situation at hand and they are able to get a place on the bus. The little boy narrates with preciseness the journey from the time they alight from the bus. This is a major stylistic device that Carter employs.

He describes in depth the surrounding and events within the story to make the reader feel like he is part of the story and to have a vivid presentation of the happenings in his or her mind. It can be clearly seen that all through the first chapter, Little Tree learns his immediate environment, he adapts to the way of life in his grandparents homestead. Human relations are a great interest, we get into the creation of the bond between the little boy and his grandparents. Little Tree describes the gift from his grandmother.

He describes in the sixth page how his grandmother had made him moccasins which he wore when still wet and walked up and down the floor till they became dry, soft and fitting. He is precise in explaining that they did fit perfectly and the affection towards his grandmother is evident. After he has been made moccasins by his grandmother, the grandfather promises that he can be able to join him in the high trail. It is of great importance to note the words the grandfather uses. He tells him that if he wanted to go with him he must be able to wake up early on his own.

He says a man rises by his own will in the morning. In order to create independence in his grandson the old man does not wake up the little boy but intentionally speaks to his wife in a loud voice to wake up the little boy. When he gets out of the cabin to find the little boy awake, prepared and waiting for him it is clear beyond any reasonable doubt that the two are bound to have a great connection. It is during the hunting trip that the two get to have a connection and the Youngman is able to learn the ways of the hunters from the grand father.

Am fascinated by the emphasis on education by the grandparents; He points out that the grandmother always read to grandfather and in extension to him in the evenings. He makes a very important observation that they always read books written by Mr. Shakespeare unless they were about politics and the government. We learn that the grand father is a great fanatic of George Washington and clearly even has an excuse for the decision by Washington to tax whiskers. Apart from learning to live with his grandparents, the little boy also learns the way of the Cherokee.

His perception of the white people becomes distorted as he, from his grandfather learns that they are greedy and egocentric. It does not take long before Little Tree is taken away from his grandparents to a boarding school. The writer uses narration
