HRM AND PERSONAL PRACTICE REPORT 0 Introduction 1 Personal objectives 1 Personal In the short term, I would like to improve my time control skills during the school year especially on my homework part. In the long term, I wish I would be able to concentrate on a specific task and to identify those aspects of HRM that are most difficult to be fully understood and addressed. 1.1.2 Professional In the short term, I would like to increase my professional experience in a real-work environment, through taking a part time job in the HR department of a small or medium size firm after school. In the long term, I would like to become an expert in Human Resource Management at the worlds Fortune 500 well-known multinational companies in China. 1.1.3 Academic In the short term, I would like to complete successfully my studies in HRM at Cardiff Met and have to get a Bachelor degree with a minimum classification of Second Class Honors Upper Division. In the long term, I will continue my studies in HRM filed through a post-graduate specifically in Master of Science program at Manchester University, which could help me to enhance my skills in HRM. 2.0 Part One 2.1 Presentation One of the positive attributes of the presentation is that it has a good introduction, which serves the purpose of preparing the audience for what to expect in the course of the presentation. Similarly, the presentation makes it easy for the audience to have a clear understanding of the content. This is achieved by defining of strategic HRM terms used in the course of the presentation. Seemingly, the presentation was thoroughly researched on, as reference materials are included at the end. Another positive attribute of the presentation is the fact that the recommendations that have been outlined at the end of the report are related to the content that has been discussed in the course of the presentation. Over and above, it is imperative to acknowledge that the structure of the presentation is ideal. This is supported by the fact that the slides are well organized and that the content is well presented. In as much as the presentation appears to be the finest article, it fails to meet the expectations at some instances. For example (Dennis, 2006) that is referred to in, the presentation has not been properly cited. In as much as the research has covered most of the aspects of strategic HRM, it has failed to give examples of institutions whenever necessary. If I were to repeat the task, I would develop the presentation by giving specific examples of organizations that have implemented the strategic aspects of HRM successfully or unsuccessfully. Similarly, I would make the presentation clear and simple to understand just has been done in the work 2.2 Report Going through the report, one would not fail to recognize the positive aspects of the report. For starters, the report is brief and clear, making it easy to understand. Similarly, the report is precise and concise. The report is accurate as it touches on strategic HRM as well as performance management, which are the main content of the work (Stone 2008, 59). The fact that the report touches on the structure of the presentation is likewise a positive attribute. The report is of great resource because it identifies areas that need improvements and provides insight on how best to make the areas better. In as much as the report has touched on strategic HRM and performance management, it has failed to take into account career succession planning, incorporated in the presentation. If I were to work on the report a fresh, I would ascertain that I include all the things mentioned in the presentation. 2.3 Team Performance All our group members met on eight occasions to research on the content of the presentation and to have an in depth analysis of the report. After the all the eight meetings, we were certain that we had done our best to argue and make sense out of all that we had been researching. In as much as we did our best to make sense out of what we were to cover, I must attest to the fact that we found the whole presentation exercise rather challenging majorly because English is our second language, and all our group members were of Chinese origin, implying that Chinese is our first language. Personally, I presume true the fact that I did my best to ensure that we got it right as a group. For starters, the group tasked me with the role of being the reviewer. In discharging my responsibilities, I chaired all the eight sittings that we had to deliberate on our work. In like manner, I reviewed the draft and made recommendations on how the final work would be made better. As the reviewer, I also made sure that the content we were going through was relevant to the work. I must attest to the fact that the group member who was tasked with doing the presentation performed remarkably well. The same applies to the research leader who was tasked with the responsibility of assigning each group member with the task he or she was to work on. The research leader was similarly tasked with the responsibility of collecting the information from the group members. Credit must also be accorded to the report leader who upon receiving what had been researched by the group members, designed the structure that our report was to take and together with all other group members made sure that our work was argued out to the finest article. During our final sitting as a group, we went through the draft before settling on mechanisms through which we could make the report better. To ensure that we got it right, we assessed whether our report was relevant to the subject and whether we had placed all the content under the right sections. We proofread our work to ascertain that all careless mistakes were no more. Over and above, I presume true that teamwork contributed a lot towards us having a good presentation. 3.0 Part Two. 3.1 Achievements Time management was one of my major areas of concern when I was drafting my personal development plan. As a matter of fact, it came first under the aspects that needed improvement. The debate on whether I was improving in regard to my time management was to be verified through the manner in which I would work on my assessments, as well as my input when it came to the group assignments. I have to attest to the fact that I have registered significant improvement when it comes to time management. This is majorly because more often than not, I begin working on my assignments early enough, thereby avoiding the late rush and submitting my assignments in time. In as much as I would not define my level of participation when it comes to group work as excellent, I presume true the fact that I am a good team player, I keep time when attending the group sittings, and my input cannot go un noticed. This implies that on a personal basis, I have recorded some significant improvement when it comes to time management. Concerning the global week event, I have to accede to the fact that at the beginning, I thought the task would be challenging. Nevertheless, the international office officers as well as my friends made the event a success. The event that a considerable number of students attended the event was the first pointer that the preparation and the events were properly carried out. In as much as a section of the students told us to improve on some areas the next time we would be organizing such events, some gave us credit for having organized the event pretty well. The part-time job was not easy to come across. At first, I presumed that I would land the job quite faster; nevertheless, it took a long duration than I expected the student’s offices to accord me the opportunity that I had been expecting. Over and above, I presume that I have been faring on well with the employment, notably because the status report from the employer has seldom been negative. One of the issues that I incorporated on my personal development plan was to be one-step ahead of the other HRM students within our institution. I expected to evaluate this by assessing how I performed not only in class, but also in group discussions as well as the assignments that our instructors provided. To this point, I have to accede that the guidance I have been getting from my lecturers has been of great help. Majorly because the tasks that they have been recommending have come in handy in ensuring that i become a world, class professional. Another of my medium-term plans has been to establish a wide knowledge background of HRM, which would come in handy in the future when I pursue my maters in the same. My lectures have been of great help. At a personal level, I have been doing a lot of reading. I am certain that I will grow into an excellent HRM professional. 3.2 Amendments In my personal developmental plan, I incorporated the fact that I needed to visit various parts of Europe in order to expand my horizon and get various perspectives of HRM. Nevertheless, after serious considerations, I have made a decision to read various journals on HRM and to attend various seminars and conferences that would help me learn the different perspectives. On the same note, I hold the opinion that I would benefit hugely from consulting various HRM experts and career experts. 3.3 New Objectives In as much as being an expert in HRM majorly demands that I would be dealing with many people, notably employees, it also requires that I would be handling many issues in a day ranging from matters that affect the leave of employees to those that deal with recruitment (Radhawa 2007, pg. 117). To this effect, it would be of great significance if I put myself through mechanisms that would help me be more organized as an individual. Similarly, I hold the opinion that for me to be an all-round professional; I need to put myself through mechanisms that would make me a good negotiator. This would make me know the best way to handle the different opinion that would be held by the employees with whom I will be serving in the future. Another objective that I would set for myself is that of being a good communicator. This is majorly because as a HRM, it would be required of me to convey messages to other heads of departments, to employees as well as all the potential employers who would be interested in working with our organization (Sims 2007, 108). In as much as I pride myself in being a person who does not see a problem with doing the right thing, I see the need to incorporate in my plan, mechanisms that ensure that I grow into a discrete individual as well as one who respects the rules and regulations that govern the institutions that I work.
