Human Service Provider Interview First Location: Position: In the first location, I interviewed a one worker who was a Community Site Supervisor. Education and Training: To be able to rise to this position, the Community Site Supervisor had attained a Bachelors Degree in Community Organizing with a minor in Economic Development. He has been working at the health center for the last twenty-five years. He has also attended different trainings and seminars that have enabled him to fit well in the human service section. Initially, he used to provide services such as counseling and social services, but now, he does health education. His education qualification was not necessarily of human services but has trained in this field to work as one. In his job, he does the direct service provision, but most of the time, he supervises people who do direct service. Types of Services Provided: The health center provides health care services, where there is a comprehensive primary care service. The interviewee himself works with the segment that looks at the social health care determinants and help patients overcome such challenges of social health care determinants to be able to access healthcare. He works with the youth to solve two problems, one of them is the history of incarceration and connecting people to health care. He is also charged with the duty of overseeing health screening of people in the community and taking then to the health center to receive healthcare. Population that it Deals with: The center deals mostly with the young people, most of whom are of pre-adolescent and adults of between ages 12-24-year-old. The interviewee is in-charge of four different programs that he oversee their provision to this population. History of the Organization: The organization started in 1972 that resulted from a movement in the late 60s about creating a big community center. In those days, Worcester was an isolated part of the city that was far from the city. Therefore, it forced people who were sick to take a bus to the hospital. Then the doctors and professors a nearby college organized and created the center. Initially, it was named after a housing project in the area, Great Brook Valley Health Center, but now it is called the Hadron-M-Kennedy Community Health center. Funding: The organization has federal state and local funding. People who have health insurance also pay through the insurance. The interviewee specifically works with the foundation that is funded by the state of private funding. The services that the interviewee oversee does not generate any income, so it is fully funded. However, the health center services that the facility provides, charge at least something for the services. Challenges: First challenge is working with stigmatized people to identify their health care problem and sort for help for them from within and outside the healthcare center. Secondly, the challenge of people who lack knowledge about what primary or preventive care is. So he works with a non-proactive population, who only visit a doctor when they are sick. Another challenge is providing transportation to people to ensure that they access the service. Number of Staff in the Organization: There are over 250 workers at the health center. However, the program that the employee oversee, Correction to Community Health Care Connections and Prevention and Counselling Services, has only twelve employees. How the organization Impacts the Surrounding Community: The organization provides services that are crucial and sensitive to the needs of the people it serves. The also look at a person as a whole to ensure they live healthier. The organization also provide direct and indirect employment to many people. What the interviewee like most about what he does: He likes training people and working with the community since this helps people live healthier and help people guide themselves more than they guide them. He also enjoys helping people breach the barriers and use his connections to benefit other people. Personal Analysis: Personal Impression of the Organization: This organization does amazing work to the community. We find that there are those people who are not aware of the social disposing factors to illnesses. The organization works with these kinds of people to offer them the kind of training necessary for them to know such factors. The organization also offers health care testing and screening to the community to ensure that those illnesses that might be upcoming in the health of individuals are identified earlier, and preventive services or measure are provided. The organization is aware of the fact that some people are not aware of the primary health care or preventive health care practices. For that matter, the organization takes the responsibility to offer their services to such people to let them know that such practices exist. They, therefore, make it their effort to ensure that those barriers that the community members might face in trying to seek health care services are broken. In this way, the community, therefore, have easy access to the health care services, which is even brought near their reach. The organization also help the community members to gain access to some health care services that are not available in their health care center. They, therefore, use their connection to help improve lives in the community. I liked so much an organization as they provide carefree care to the people in the community to make them aware of their health care in the society. This organization does amazing work to the community as they inform people about their health situations without their effort. In this way, they guide the people in the community in ways through which they can be able to take good care of their health better than the agency can help them take care of their lives. As being human service provider or a community worker requires service beyond self, this agency in this organization that works with the youth to make them aware of their social health care problems, must be one that is propelled by the love of other people to be able to facilitate such kind of programs to people. Apart from helping people in taking care of their health, this organization also help people in achieving other things in life. For instance, the organization employs many people who work there directly and indirectly. It has more than 250 workers whose families, friends, and relatives depend on the salaries that they receive from this organization. It is, therefore, very important in impacting so many peoples lives. Other people also have businesses they run because of the community created by the presence of this health care center. There are also suppliers of raw materials and other inventories to the health care center. These earn a living directly or indirectly due to this organization. Social health care determinants are health factors that if prevented, can be able to reduce the chances of people getting ill, or reducing cases of illness. The organization is in the frontline to ensuring that such determinants are dealt with at the grassroots level so that they dont go ahead to cause the health care problems. This organization, according to its history, was established to provide humanitarian services in health care. It still struggles to accomplish its initial objectives or purposes of establishment until now. It has, however, expanded and increased its services to cover four main services and programs. The organization is both profit making and non-profit making at the same time. The part that is funded by the federal government, which offer the health care services, charges a cost to its services. However, the section that the interviewee works for is totally funded by private funding. It, therefore, offers free of charge services to the community members. The section that offers services at a cost, in the health center, does so through health care insurance provision or direct payment from the individuals. Personal Impression of the Worker: A Community Site Supervisor is responsible for overseeing community health care service provision (HumanServices.EDU.org 1). He can get into direct service delivery, but at times, he also does supervision to the service delivery. The worker is learned and has a degree in Community Organizing. Therefore, his position requires someone with at least a degree in areas dealing with community services. He has however acquired other trainings that have made him be able to rise to his current position as a community health educator. I realize this position requires someone who has a lot of experience in working with the community. He has been working at the hospital for the last twenty-five year. Therefore, he must be having adequate experience to discharge his duties at his workplace. Working with the youth is sometimes quite challenging. However, the interviewee has been able to work successfully with this group for a very long period, showing how much he is knowledgeable at his place of work. The interviewee oversees the operations under his area of operation. Hence, it shows that he works with other people who may be carrying out direct service delivery operations to the people. His work, therefore, may involve both office and field work. To be able to offer services to the community, one must be a person who like social interaction, therefore, the critical involvement is required when choosing who to serve in such offices. It must have been very hard to find such a dedicated person to serve in his position. But, it could be easy when the person displays a lot of experience in working with the community in service delivery section. Second Location Position: The second interviewee was a Director Special Project. Training or Education: The interviewee has a Bachelors Degree in English and Masters Degree in Public Health. She worked oversees, in South America, as a peace promoter, Rural and Community Health provider for three years. Services of the Organization: The organization provides services such as training health workers and impacting policy that can reduce health disparities. American Tropical Training Programs are offered by the organization. The interviewee does a lot if curriculum development. It also provides end of life care. Population it serves: The organization is a community health center, and it does not focus ion a specific group of the community, but offers its services to all the community member. However, most of their clients are people between twenties and fifties. It also serves people who require end of life care. History of the Organization: The organization was originally founded by the EHAK under the federal funding scheme. It was started like sixteen years ago since it was started. It was started to focus on central mass and justice in education. The organization has evolved over the years because of the leadership. Funding: Currently, the funding is 12% the EHAK. So it is funded by the EHAK. Challenges: The organization depends on grants, so it has challenges in seeking grants. Another challenge is in getting health care institutions with an interest in the good trained health care workers the organization produces. Changing priorities is the third challenge. Staff in the Organization: The organization has only less than twenty employees. Impact of the Organization to the Community: The organization offers training to the community that they dont charge them for. There is also community health assessments done by the organization and a lot of free service delivery to the community. What the Interviewee like most about her Job: The interviewee likes the fact that her job is very flexible, and the leadership tends to develop new kinds of work and everyone works as a team. Personal Analysis: Personal Impressions of Human Service Worker: I tend to think that being the director of special programs; one needs to be knowledgeable in a lot of areas. The interviewee here has both a Bachelors Degree and a Masters Degree in different fields. This makes her show a wide range of knowledge that she has acquired as far as educational qualification is concerned. The directors position requires at least a higher level of education, such as a Masters Degree. Being in such a high position in the organization also requires some level of experience in a service delivery position or management position. The interviewee says that she had a three years experience working in South America where she as a peace promoter as well a rural and community health provider. This way, one can be prepared for human service provision. The organization deals with a wider view of the community, and the interviewee seem not to be in the direct service delivery to the people. The direct is also not so much aware the job description of the other team of workers as she does not seem to know exactly what work the health care providers do. However, there is an evidence of good leadership in this organization that has kept the team working so well. There is also teamwork in the work place that seemingly, the worker likes most about this organization. The organization is also said to have good knowledge and skills in recruiting those working with them as the interviewee finds a very warm working conditions while working with her team members in this organization. A worker, therefore, seem to enjoy working in this organization. There is also adequate motivation for her in the organization to continue working with them as the leadership is very much supportive and understanding. Personal Impression of the Organization/Agency: This organization deals with the provision of training to health workers and working on the policy that reduces health disparities. It, therefore, qualifies to be an organization that offers human services. Such organizations require funding, and this organization is receive 12% of the EHAK funding. However, the funding might not be enough. Therefore, the organization seeks to find grants from other organizations. It has been a challenge being able to receive such grants anyway (HHS.gov 2). The organization, being a fully non-profit making, tries so hard to reduce the recurrent expenditure. In its attempts to do so, it has just less than twenty staff. It manages to carry out its duties with this small number of employees as they employ people who are very good and efficient in what they do. These employees can work well independently, hence can meet the targets of the organization. The organization achieves its purpose by offering health care training to the people in the community without charging them anything. In this way, they can help in increasing awareness of health care determinants and problems. Hence, they reduce unnecessary illnesses. They also provide end of life care to the community. It, therefore, shows how the organization has a challenging responsibility as it is very hard to provide care for a terminally ill patient. This organization, therefore, has its challenges in obtaining grants to make the services in it run smoothly. Finding health care centers to take the people they have trained is also a challenge. In a nutshell, human service provision is more of a calling than a profession. However, there are educational qualification requirement for various positions in the human service organizations. These organizations are mostly funded, either by the federal government or the private funders.
