Examples Of linguistic variation that might be used to assign unwanted aspects of identity to those who use the variation 1- The first source selected related to the topic of linguistic variation is written by Werner Kallmeyer and Inken Keim. It is an article discussing the socio-cultural orientation of migrants in the German society. The research article is the sociolinguistic study of different immigrant groups focusing on the relationship between linguistic variations and different aspects of identity.

The researchers have conducted the study in particular cultural and social setting in order to study how different people use linguistic variations and the way it predicts their identity. The researchers have correlated the anthropological and ethnographical concepts in order to study the variations in linguistics and its social identity (Kallmeyer and Keim 2). In the article, the researchers have discussed different concepts like Linguistic variation as a device for interactional organization and topical organization in discourse.

It also signifies the socio-symbolic functions of Linguistic variation. The article is selected as a source because it explains the concepts of linguistic variation in detail with its wide application and impact in socio-cultural setting, communication, and identity. The most important aspect of this source is that for the theoretical content that is described in the article, the researchers have given elaborated examples. It was easy to understand the theoretical concepts when studied in relevance to the given examples.

The article is well researched and well drafted with comprehensive knowledge of the concepts. The article also discusses different theoretical concepts that are studied in the class, so it is feasible to correlate the given content with the studied material. Another reason is the credibility and validity of the information that is provided in the article as compared to other web pages or blogs. 2- The other source selected for studying the assigned topic is ‘Identity in Language: An Exploration of the Social Implications of Linguistic Variation’.

For studying the implications of linguistic variations on identity, it is important to understand the concept of linguistic variations and identity separately. This article explains the concepts and then gradually builds the relationship between the two. Unlike the previous article this article is not related to any specific cultural setting, rather it explains with different examples how people from multiethnic groups use the linguistic variations and how it specifies their identity. The researcher has explained the concepts of ‘solidarity, alliances and loyalties to explain the social relationship between people linking it to their identity and use of language.

The researcher has also compared different communities and societies like Hispanics, Spanish, Puerto Rico, etc. that will be useful for obtaining a broader aspect of the research (Sterling 5). The article is selected because it provides the comparison of different communities on Linguistic Variations and their identities. The research included in the article helps in studying the social and cultural impact on the language variation of different communities in the US particularly. Strength of the article is its simple language and examples to illustrate the concepts.

The article also presents different concepts that have been studied in the course already. Therefore, it is easy to correlate. Works Cited Kallmeyer, Werner and Inken Keim.
